The Toyota Vanguard is a family SUV. Its engine relies on the head gasket to keep coolant out of the combustion chambers. When that seal fails, coolant can reach places it should never be. Driving on with coolant where it does not belong risks serious damage inside the engine.
Once the car was towed in, our team checked the engine. There was coolant sitting at the spark plugs. That should never happen, and it pointed to a problem at the cylinder head.
We explained the plan to the owner before touching anything: open the engine fully, check the cylinder head and block, then confirm the cost. He agreed.
With the engine opened, the cylinder head was uneven, so it had to go for skimming before it could be refitted. The engine block was in good enough condition to reuse. The pistons were replaced as part of the overhaul.
A head gasket can fail after the engine overheats, after running low on coolant, or simply with age. Overheating can also warp the cylinder head, so it no longer sits perfectly flat on the block. A head that is not flat cannot seal, which is why this one was skimmed.
On this car the cylinder head was found uneven once the engine was opened, and it was skimmed and refitted with a new head gasket as part of the overhaul.
We carried out a full engine overhaul. The package covers the pistons, piston rings, piston bearings, timing chain, head gasket, valves, valve seals, valve cover gasket and spark plugs. The cylinder head was skimmed flat before it went back on.
