Volvo builds a safe, solid car, but a few faults come up again and again, especially as they age in Singapore's heat and stop-start traffic:

• PCV and oil trap leaks. On the older five-cylinder petrol engines, a blocked crankcase breather builds pressure and pushes oil past the seals. It shows up as oil leaks, oil burning and a rough idle. Caught early it is a contained job.
• Timing belt. Many Volvo engines run a timing belt that must be changed on schedule. Miss it and a snapped belt can wreck the engine. We change belts and tensioners as part of servicing.
• Aircon not cold. Compressors, condensers and leaks are common in our climate. A weak or warm aircon is worth checking before the compressor gives out completely.
• Battery and electrical. A low battery charge message, early flat batteries and charging faults turn up often. The fix starts with reading the car properly, not just swapping the alternator.
• Gearbox. Jerky or slipping shifts and limp mode point to fluid, valve body or internal wear. The fluid is not really lifetime, despite what the manual implies.
• Suspension and brakes. Bushings, dampers, pads and discs wear with our roads and the weight of the XC SUVs.
