Highest Rated. We fix the torque converter fault, not replace your whole gearbox.
Shudder or judder at lock-up, slipping, stalling, or transmission overheating? We diagnose the real fault with dealer-level tools and fix the converter, so you keep your own gearbox instead of paying for a full one.
Dealer-level diagnostics (PIWIS, ISTA, Xentry, ODIS) and over 2,000 transmission jobs done. We pinpoint the real torque converter fault first, not guess.
A failing converter does not mean a new gearbox. We fix the actual fault so you keep your own unit, far cheaper, using quality reconditioned or OEM-grade parts.
Free honest diagnosis, no obligation, with free towing if you can't drive it in. Spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee.

We are Singapore's torque converter specialists. We diagnose and fix the actual converter fault across conventional automatic gearboxes, for continental and Japanese cars, from Mercedes, BMW and Volvo to Mazda, Toyota and Honda, so you keep your own gearbox.
Dealer-level scan plus a symptom and fluid check to confirm the converter is the real culprit, not guesswork. Free, no obligation, and you can spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee.
We fix the converter fault and replace the unit with a quality reconditioned or OEM-grade part, with fresh correct-specification fluid and filter. You keep your own gearbox.
If debris has spread into the gearbox, we tell you straight and do the internal work in the same job. If it hasn't, we leave it alone. We fix what's actually wrong.
Every car is road-tested across speed and load to confirm the shudder is gone and no fault codes remain. The car doesn't leave until it's right.
Here is the good news first. A failing torque converter is a fault we fix, not a reason to replace your entire gearbox. We are Singapore's torque converter specialists, and most jobs mean repairing the converter and keeping your own gearbox, far cheaper than a full overhaul. To see why, it helps to know what the part actually does.
Most owners know they have an engine and a gearbox. The torque converter is what connects them. In a conventional automatic, it is a fluid coupling that sits between the engine and the gearbox input shaft, and it works every time you pull away, slow down, or sit at a stop. It transmits engine power through hydraulic fluid, multiplies torque so the car moves off smoothly, and lets the engine idle without stalling while the car is stationary.
Inside it is a lockup clutch, sometimes called the torque converter clutch or TCC. At cruising speed this clutch locks the converter solid to cut fluid slip and save fuel. It is this lockup clutch that most often causes the shudder that first brings a torque converter problem to your attention.
A torque converter is found in conventional automatic gearboxes, which covers most Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda, non-hybrid Toyota and many others. It is not used in CVT cars, which run a belt and pulley, nor in DSG or Porsche PDK dual-clutch transmissions, which use mechanical clutch packs. Not sure which your car has? WhatsApp us your make, model and year and we'll tell you straight away.
The torque converter is one of the most overlooked parts of an automatic gearbox. When it starts to fail, the symptoms are specific and recognisable once you know what to look for: a shudder at a particular speed, a vibration under light throttle, slipping that feels different from a gearbox slip, or overheating that comes and goes.
What many owners do instead is assume it is a tyre balance issue, an engine mount, or a general gearbox fault. They get those checked, find nothing wrong, and meanwhile the converter keeps degrading and the repair keeps getting more expensive. Left alone, a failing converter contaminates the transmission fluid with friction debris and spreads wear through the gearbox, turning a contained torque converter job into a full gearbox rebuild. We diagnose the fault correctly the first time and fix what is actually wrong before it gets there.
1. Shuddering between 40 and 70km/h. The best-known symptom and the one that brings the most owners to us. A shudder or judder that shows up consistently at a set speed under light to moderate throttle, often like driving over a rumble strip on a smooth road. It is the lockup clutch slipping instead of locking solidly, because the friction lining has worn or the fluid has degraded.
2. Vibration at light throttle on the expressway. A subtler version of the shudder. The car feels rough or buzzy under light throttle at highway speed, then smooths out when you lift off or accelerate harder. It is often the first sign before the full shudder appears.
3. Slipping that feels different from a gearbox slip. A brief surge or flare, where the revs rise without the speed following, usually when the converter should be locked at cruise. If you have been told the gearbox is slipping but an inspection found nothing obvious, the lockup clutch is worth checking.
4. Transmission overheating. A slipping converter generates far more heat than a healthy one, raising fluid temperature across the system. Unexplained transmission temperature warnings put the converter in the diagnostic picture.
5. Contaminated transmission fluid. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid, or fluid with fine metallic particles, can mean the lockup clutch lining is shedding material. That debris circulates through the whole gearbox and speeds up wear everywhere it goes, so it is one of the more serious failure modes.
6. Noise from the converter area. Rattling, grinding or whining near the converter housing, often at idle or low speed, can point to bearing wear or internal damage. It needs checking before it develops further.
On some models, including the BMW X1 and 216, the transmission oil cooler can develop an internal leak and let coolant into the gearbox. Coolant attacks every water-sensitive part inside, the torque converter included. A flush does not fix this, it just moves contaminated fluid around and delays the inevitable.
The correct repair is a full gearbox overhaul with torque converter replacement, replacement of the auto cooler that caused the contamination, and a proper clean of the cooling circuit. It is a more involved job, but it is the only one that actually solves the problem. If a workshop offers a flush as the fix for coolant contamination, you are not getting the full picture.
Torque converter faults occur across any car with a conventional automatic gearbox. These are the ones we see most often:
Mercedes-Benz. The 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic gearboxes across the C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, GLC and more. Lockup shudder is a known concern at higher mileage.
BMW. ZF 6HP and 8HP gearboxes across the range. The coolant contamination issue on the X1 and 216 always involves torque converter replacement as part of the correct repair, while other models develop lockup shudder as mileage builds.
Volvo. Aisin and ZF units across the XC90, XC60, S60, S80, V60, V40 and V70. XC90 shudder complaints are among the more common Volvo cases we see.
Jaguar and Land Rover. ZF 8HP units. Lockup shudder is not uncommon on higher-mileage Discovery, Range Rover, Jaguar XF and XE models.
Toyota, Mazda and Honda. Non-hybrid Toyota automatics such as the Camry and Alphard, Mazda's SKYACTIV-Drive across the 3, 6, CX-5 and CX-8, and non-CVT Honda models like the Accord and CR-V. Hybrids use an eCVT, which works differently and has no conventional converter.
For other makes, including Nissan, Hyundai and Kia models with conventional automatics, the same faults apply. Not sure whether your car has a torque converter automatic? WhatsApp us your make, model and year.
We diagnose the actual fault. Torque converter shudder is often misread as a tyre issue, an engine mount, or a general gearbox fault. We have the dealer-level tools and the hands-on experience to identify it correctly the first time, so you don't pay for the wrong repair.
We tell you the full picture before we start. If a failing converter has contaminated the fluid and spread debris, the gearbox needs attention too. We explain that during diagnosis and quote the full scope, with no surprises at collection.
We know when a gearbox overhaul is also needed, and when it is not. If the converter has failed on its own, we say so and quote accordingly. If the damage has spread, we tell you that too. You get an honest assessment, not the most profitable one.
Quality OEM-grade parts throughout. Converter units and the associated transmission parts are OEM-grade, with the correct fluid specification. The quality of the replacement is what determines how long the repair lasts. For deeper internal faults, see our valve body repair and gearbox overhaul work.
Over 2,000 transmission jobs completed. We have seen torque converter failure across every major make on Singapore roads, so the diagnosis, the repair scope and the correct parts are well understood. You are not a test case.
Sometimes, and only at the early stage. If the lockup clutch is just beginning to slip but has not yet shed debris into the system, a fluid change with the correct fresh specification can reduce or resolve the shudder. We assess this during the diagnosis and will tell you honestly if a fluid service is a reasonable first step for your car.
Once the converter has contaminated the fluid with friction material, a flush no longer helps. It moves contaminated fluid around the system and delays the proper repair. Singapore's heat and stop-start traffic are hard on transmission fluid, so the gap between catching it early and catching it late is real, both in cost and in how much of the gearbox is affected.
1 Car Service is Singapore's best torque converter repair specialist, with dealer-level diagnostics and skilled technicians across all makes and models. We diagnose the actual fault honestly, then fix the converter rather than replace your whole gearbox, so you keep your own unit and pay far less. Free honest diagnosis, no obligation, and you can spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee.
If your car shudders between 40 and 70km/h, slips, stalls or overheats, drive down or WhatsApp us for a free diagnostic check. We'll tell you straight whether it is the torque converter, what the repair involves, and what it costs.
WhatsApp us for a free diagnosis and an honest quote. We'll confirm whether it's the torque converter with dealer-level tools, fix the fault rather than replace your whole gearbox, and tell you the cost before any work begins. Spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee.
WhatsApp us - free diagnosisReal cases from our Sin Ming workshop, each written up with the symptom, the diagnosis, what the job involved and, where recorded, the published cost.
In most cases it means replacing the torque converter unit rather than repairing the existing one. The gearbox has to be removed to reach it. Once the converter is replaced, the transmission fluid and filter are replaced with the correct fresh specification. If the failing converter has contaminated the system with debris, the gearbox internals may also need attention in the same job. We diagnose first and tell you exactly what your car needs before quoting.
That speed range and symptom pattern is very characteristic of torque converter lockup clutch shudder. It is not the only possible cause, but it is the most common one. Come in for a free diagnostic check. We assess the symptom pattern, scan the fault codes, and check the fluid condition, which together tell us whether the converter is the culprit before we recommend any repair.
Torque converters are found in conventional automatic gearboxes. If your car is a non-hybrid automatic and not a DSG, CVT or PDK model, it almost certainly has one. In practice that covers most Mercedes with 7G or 9G-Tronic, most BMW with ZF automatics, most Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda SKYACTIV-Drive, non-hybrid Toyota and non-CVT Honda models. WhatsApp us your make, model and year if you are not sure.
It depends on the make and model and whether the failure has caused any associated gearbox damage. A standalone converter replacement with a fluid service is a more contained job than one that also needs a gearbox overhaul. We confirm the exact cost after the free diagnostic scan. WhatsApp us your make, model and symptoms for a realistic idea before you come in.
For early-stage shudder, where the lockup clutch is starting to slip but has not yet shed debris, a fluid change with the correct fresh specification sometimes reduces or resolves it. We assess this during diagnosis and will tell you honestly if it is a reasonable first step. If the converter has already contaminated the fluid with friction material, a flush does not solve the problem, it only moves the contamination around and delays the proper repair.
Yes. Coolant contamination in a BMW X1 or 216 transmission usually comes from the auto cooler leaking internally. When coolant gets into the system it damages every water-sensitive part, the torque converter among them. The correct repair is a full gearbox overhaul with torque converter replacement and auto cooler replacement, plus a proper clean of the cooling circuit. A flush will not fix this. Come in for a free check and we'll give you the honest picture.
Most jobs are completed within 3 to 5 working days. We confirm the timeline after the diagnostic scan. If gearbox internal work is also required, the timeline reflects that. We update you throughout so you can plan around the downtime.
Very possibly, and this is exactly why owners come to us. Torque converter symptoms are often misdiagnosed as needing a full gearbox replacement, which is a far bigger bill. As Singapore's best torque converter specialists, we diagnose the actual fault with dealer-level tools first. If the fault is isolated to the converter and the gearbox internals are sound, we fix the converter and you keep your own gearbox. If a gearbox overhaul is genuinely needed, we'll explain exactly why. You get the honest picture either way. Come in for a free diagnostic check before committing to anything.
WhatsApp us and we'll diagnose the actual fault with dealer-level tools, then fix the converter rather than swap your whole gearbox. You'll know exactly what's wrong and what it costs before any work begins. No surprises at collection. Spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee.
