1. Unusual noises. Grinding, whining or clunking when shifting points to components not engaging smoothly, often worn gears, low lubrication, or damaged synchros.

2. Difficulty shifting. Resistance or sticking when changing gears, or delayed and abrupt changes in an automatic. 4. Leaking transmission fluid. Red, brown or black fluid under the car. The fluid lubricates and cools the gearbox, so address leaks quickly before low levels cause further damage.

5. Burning smell. Often overheating transmission fluid that can no longer lubricate and cool effectively. Have it checked immediately, as overheating shortens gearbox life.

6. Transmission or check-engine warning light. The onboard diagnostics have flagged a fault. Get the car scanned to pinpoint the exact issue, especially on a DSG or DCT where error messages often point to the mechatronic unit.
