A CVT is smooth and fuel efficient when healthy. When it starts to go, the signs are hard to ignore: slipping under acceleration, shuddering at low speed, a whine at highway speed, delayed engagement, or an overheating warning on the dash.
A CVT overhaul means stripping the unit completely and replacing all the consumable internals: the drive belt or chain, pulleys, solenoid valves, clutch assembly, all seals and gaskets, the transmission filter, and the correct manufacturer-specified CVT fluid. Nissan's Xtronic CVT, fitted to the Sylphy, Almera, Qashqai, X-Trail, Teana, Latio and Note, is one of the most frequently repaired gearboxes in Singapore. High-mileage Sylphy and Almera units, including ex-taxi cars, are very familiar to our team. We see them every week and know what fails and why.

Not every Japanese brand uses a CVT. Mazda is the standout, sticking with conventional torque-converter automatics across its range. The SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed in the Mazda 2, 3, 6, CX-3, CX-5 and CX-8 is a well-regarded unit that responds well to a proper overhaul once internal wear sets in at higher mileage.
Lexus non-hybrid models, some Honda models, older Toyota platforms and certain Hyundai and Kia variants also run conventional automatics. When these need attention, the approach is the same: a full strip, inspection, replacement of all consumable internals, and a rebuild to the same standard as any other overhaul. Toyota and Lexus hybrids use a power-split eCVT. This is not a belt-and-pulley CVT. It blends power from the petrol engine and the hybrid battery through electric motors and a planetary gear set, and it is common across the Prius, Corolla Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid and most Lexus hybrids.
There is one important distinction for Honda owners too. The petrol Vezel and petrol HR-V use a conventional belt-and-pulley CVT that our overhaul covers. The Hybrid versions use an e-CVT, which is a fundamentally different electric-motor system. Hybrid gearbox issues need a different diagnostic and repair approach. Higher-output Hyundai and Kia models, including certain Tucson, Sonata, Sportage and K5 variants, use a dual-clutch gearbox rather than a CVT, similar in concept to the VW Group DSG. When these develop a fault, the cause is usually the clutch pack or the mechatronic control unit, not the whole gearbox. We diagnose first and confirm which it is before recommending a repair scope.
