Singapore's best BMW gearbox specialists. We overhaul the ZF 6HP and 8HP automatics and Steptronic units across the full BMW range, diagnosed with BMW ISTA and rebuilt with OEM-grade parts to shift like new, backed by the longest warranty in Singapore.

BMW gearbox problems? We're Singapore's best BMW gearbox specialists

BMW builds an exceptional gearbox. But when one goes wrong, a lot of workshops either don't really know what they're dealing with, or they see a chance to charge you for things you don't need. The instinct, especially from a dealer, is to quote a full replacement unit when that is rarely the only option.

We don't guess. We've overhauled hundreds of BMW gearboxes across the full range, from the 1 Series to the 7 Series and the X lineup, and we diagnose with BMW ISTA dealer-level diagnostics, not a generic scanner, so we read the complete fault memory the way BMW designed it to be read. That means we fix the actual problem, not just the code that happens to show up on a cheap reader. We tell you exactly what's wrong before we quote anything, and we back every overhaul with the longest warranty in Singapore.

Most BMW gearbox overhauls run from S$2,380 to S$3,200 depending on the model, a fraction of what a replacement unit costs, and you can spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee. We diagnose first, quote second, and you decide. Drive down for a free check, no obligation. If you want the whole-car picture, see our BMW workshop page; this one is the gearbox deep-dive.

BMW gearbox problems? We're Singapore's best BMW gearbox specialists

BMW X1 and 216 owners: read this first

This one is important, and most workshops won't tell you upfront. The BMW X1 and 216 have a known issue where the autocooler leaks coolant straight into the transmission. If this has happened to your car, here is what you need to know.

A flush will not fix it. Water and coolant are extremely damaging to everything inside a gearbox. The clutch packs, seals and friction materials are all highly sensitive to moisture. Once coolant gets in, the damage is done and it cannot be flushed out.

Plenty of workshops will still recommend an ATF flush for this. Some genuinely don't know better. Some do it because a flush is a quick S$300 to S$500 job that sounds convincing to a stressed owner. The reality is you spend hundreds on the flush, feel better for a few weeks, then the gearbox fails anyway, because the underlying damage was never fixed.

The correct fix is a full gearbox overhaul, including replacement of the torque converter and the autocooler itself, plus a thorough flush and clean of the whole cooling system. It is a bigger job, but it is the only one that actually solves the problem. If you drive an X1 or 216 and your gearbox is slipping or shuddering, or your coolant level keeps dropping, WhatsApp us before you let anyone touch it.

Is your BMW gearbox giving you grief? What to watch for

BMW's ZF automatics are among the best in the world when properly maintained. When they start to go, the symptoms are usually clear if you know what to look for.

1. Jerking or juddering on acceleration. That unpleasant lurch when you pull away or shift through a gear. Often worn clutch packs or solenoid issues. Caught early, it is a much smaller job.

2. Rough or delayed gear changes. Shifts that feel hesitant, heavy, or noticeably slower than before. The gearbox is losing the precision it was built for.

3. Gearbox warning light or EGS fault. Any transmission warning on the BMW cluster needs a proper ISTA scan, not a generic reader. ISTA reads the full fault memory the way BMW intended.

4. Slipping or loss of drive. The car drops out of gear unexpectedly, or loses power delivery entirely. Don't drive it further.

5. Failsafe or limp mode. BMW's transmission control unit locks the gearbox into a single gear to prevent further damage. This needs a diagnostic scan immediately, not a code clear and a hopeful drive.

6. Shudder at low speed or when stationary. A vibration through the drivetrain at low speed or idling in gear. Could be the torque converter, could be internal clutch wear. Either way it needs checking.

7. Coolant smell or milky fluid (X1 and 216). If your gearbox fluid looks discoloured, cloudy, or smells unusual, coolant contamination may have already started. Stop driving and get it checked.

Is your BMW gearbox giving you grief? What to watch for

What a BMW gearbox overhaul actually includes

Straightforward, no surprises. Every overhaul covers the consumable parts inside the gearbox, the parts that wear over time and need replacing.

Included consumables: clutch packs, internal seals, gearbox gaskets, transmission filter, and the correct BMW-spec transmission oil. These are the wear items that determine how well your gearbox shifts and how long it lasts.

Not included as standard: the engine, flywheel, control modules, valve body, oil pan and autocooler. These sit outside the gearbox's internal wear items and are only replaced if diagnosis shows they're faulty, which keeps the overhaul focused on what actually needs attention. The exception is the X1 and 216 coolant contamination case, where the torque converter and autocooler must be replaced as part of the fix. We confirm that during diagnosis and put it in your quote before any work starts.

Every job starts with a full BMW ISTA scan, then a complete disassembly and inspection so we find what is actually causing the fault, not just the symptom. We rebuild with OEM-grade parts, never generic internals, then road-test and run a final ISTA scan before you collect, so there are no leftover fault codes when you drive away.

What a BMW gearbox overhaul actually includes

The overhaul process

  1. Free ISTA diagnosis. A full BMW ISTA scan and a physical inspection. No charge, no obligation.
  2. Transparent quote. An itemised breakdown of exactly what needs doing and what it costs. You approve before anything starts.
  3. Expert overhaul. A full rebuild with OEM-grade parts. Most models are done in 2 to 4 days.
  4. Collect with warranty. Road-tested and cleared on ISTA, then your 2-year or 40,000km warranty is issued.

BMW gearbox types we work on

ZF 6-speed automatic (6HP). Found across a wide range of BMWs from the mid-2000s, including many 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series and X5 variants. A very well-proven unit when properly maintained. Common failure points are solenoid wear and clutch pack degradation at higher mileage.

ZF 8-speed automatic (8HP). BMW's newer 8-speed, fitted across most current models. Smoother and more efficient than its predecessor. When issues come up they tend to show as rough shifts or hesitation rather than dramatic failure, so earlier intervention usually means a simpler, cheaper fix.

BMW Steptronic variants. Various Steptronic configurations across the range. Symptoms and the diagnosis approach vary by model and generation. ISTA tells us exactly which variant you have and what the fault codes are saying.

A note on dual-clutch models: some BMW M cars and select variants use a DCT rather than a conventional ZF automatic. If your car has a dual-clutch setup and is shifting badly, WhatsApp us your model and we'll advise on what's involved before you come in. For the electronic control unit on those cars, see our mechatronic unit repair page.

BMW models we cover

We work across the full BMW passenger car and SUV range: the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 Series, the X1, X3, X4, X5 and X6, and the Z4, covering both older E-series and current F and G-series platforms.

Most gearbox overhauls for BMW models run from S$2,380 to S$3,200. Newer platforms and certain 7 Series models may sit higher. We confirm the exact figure after the free ISTA diagnosis. WhatsApp us your model, year and what you're experiencing, and we'll give you a ballpark straight away. If your car is a non-BMW European make, we cover those too on our continental gearbox repair page.

BMW gearbox overhaul cost in Singapore

How much does a BMW gearbox overhaul cost in Singapore? Most BMW models run from S$2,380 to S$3,200, and you can spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee. The exact figure depends on your specific model, year and gearbox variant, and we confirm it after the free ISTA scan.

The one thing that genuinely costs you money is waiting. A BMW gearbox fault gets more expensive the longer you drive on it. What starts as a roughly S$2,500 overhaul can become a S$10,000 replacement if you run it into the ground. Worn clutch material and contaminated fluid damage more parts the longer they circulate, so an early fix is almost always the cheaper one.

A dealer will typically quote for a full replacement unit, which is rarely the only option. An overhaul using OEM-grade parts is usually a fraction of that cost and comes with our 2-year or 40,000km warranty, the longest in Singapore. We diagnose first, quote second, and you decide. No pressure either way.

Why BMW owners in Singapore choose Singapore's best BMW gearbox specialists

We use BMW ISTA dealer-level diagnostics, not a cheap scanner. Accurate diagnosis starts with the right tool. ISTA reads the full fault memory the way BMW designed it, so we fix the actual problem, not just what shows up on a generic OBD reader.

We tell you when a full overhaul isn't needed. Some BMW gearbox problems are targeted fixes, not full rebuilds. After the diagnosis we tell you which applies to your car. If a smaller repair sorts it, that's what we recommend.

We won't sell you a flush when you need an overhaul. For X1 and 216 owners with coolant contamination, an ATF flush is not a fix, and we will never recommend one for a problem it cannot solve. If you need an overhaul, we explain why and give you a clear quote.

The longest warranty in Singapore. 2 years or 40,000km on every BMW gearbox overhaul, and we rebuild every one to last 100,000km or more under normal conditions.

Transparent pricing and instalment. A full itemised quote you approve before we open anything up, with no additions at collection. What we quote is what you pay, and you can spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee.

Gearbox specialists. More than 2,000 gearboxes overhauled across ZF, PDK, DCT, AT, CVT and AMT units. If you also need engine work, we handle that under one roof too, see our engine overhaul service.

BMW gearbox overhaul FAQ

How much does a BMW gearbox overhaul cost in Singapore?

Most BMW models run from S$2,380 to S$3,200. The exact figure depends on your specific model, year and gearbox variant. We confirm the price after the free ISTA diagnostic scan. WhatsApp us your model and year and we can give you a ballpark straight away.

What does the overhaul price include?

All consumable internal parts: clutch packs, all seals and gaskets, the transmission filter, and correct BMW-spec transmission oil. External components like the torque converter, valve body, control modules, oil pan and autocooler are not included unless they're found to be faulty during diagnosis. You only pay to replace what actually needs replacing.

My BMW X1 has a gearbox problem and a workshop said I need a flush. Is that right?

Almost certainly not. The X1 and 216 have a known issue where the autocooler leaks coolant into the transmission. A flush does not fix this. The internal parts of a BMW gearbox are highly sensitive to moisture, so once coolant gets in, a flush just moves the contamination around. The correct fix is a full overhaul with replacement of the torque converter and autocooler, plus a proper clean of the cooling system. If you've already paid for a flush and the problem came back, this is probably why.

Does the overhaul come with a warranty?

Yes. Every BMW gearbox overhaul is covered for 2 years or 40,000km, whichever comes first. It's the longest gearbox warranty available in Singapore. Most workshops offer 1 to 6 months, and a reconditioned replacement unit usually comes with one month.

How long does a BMW gearbox overhaul take?

2 to 4 working days for most models. We confirm after the free ISTA diagnosis. Parts availability for certain older or less common variants can occasionally extend this, and we tell you upfront so you can plan.

My BMW went into limp mode. What does that mean?

The transmission control unit has detected a fault and locked the gearbox into a protective state to prevent further damage. Do not clear the code and keep driving. Come in, or arrange a tow, for a full ISTA diagnostic scan. We read the actual fault, not just the surface-level code, before advising on next steps.

Do you work on older E-series BMWs?

Yes. We cover both older E-series platforms and current F and G-series BMWs. The ISTA diagnostic tools and the gearbox expertise apply across the range.

Which BMW gearboxes do you overhaul?

We overhaul the ZF 6-speed (6HP) and 8-speed (8HP) automatics and Steptronic variants found across the BMW range. Some M cars and select variants use a dual-clutch (DCT) instead. If yours is a DCT, WhatsApp us your model and we'll advise on what's involved before you come in.

Should I be worried about the dealer's quote?

Dealers typically quote for a full gearbox replacement unit, which is rarely the only option. We are Singapore's best BMW gearbox specialists, and an overhaul with us using OEM-grade parts is usually a fraction of the cost and comes with our 2-year or 40,000km warranty, the longest in Singapore. You can also spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee. WhatsApp us your model, year and symptoms, and we'll give you an honest answer on what your car actually needs.

My car can't drive to you. Can you arrange towing?

Yes. If your BMW is in limp mode or undriveable, WhatsApp us and we'll arrange towing to our workshop at Sin Ming AutoCity.
