Here is what more than 2,000 gearbox jobs have taught us. The majority of DSG problems in Audi and VW cars do not need a full gearbox overhaul. Usually it is the dual clutch. Sometimes it is the mechatronic unit. Knowing which one saves you thousands.

DSG stands for Direct Shift Gearbox. It is a dual-clutch transmission used across the Volkswagen Group, including Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda. When a DSG starts misbehaving, the instinct is to panic, because you have heard the horror stories about gearbox bills. In most cases you do not need a full overhaul. The two most common culprits are:
The dual clutch. A mechanical friction component that wears over time. Because it is mechanical, the symptoms are consistent: shuddering or juddering on takeoff, hesitation at low speed, a clear loss of power, or the car unable to engage either the odd or even-numbered gears (a characteristic of dual-clutch systems).
The mechatronic unit. The electro-hydraulic control module that manages clutch engagement and shift timing. When it fails you get jerky or erratic shifts, delayed responses, dashboard error messages, or the car refusing to select gears properly. Sometimes the fault clears for a while after a restart, then returns.
They are separate parts with different failure patterns. The diagnostic scan tells us which one is causing your symptoms. Sometimes it is both, but often it is just one. Fix the right one and your DSG feels like new.
That said, leaving a known DSG fault unaddressed will eventually damage more components. A mechatronic fix put off long enough can turn into a much larger job. Don't sit on it.
Not all DSG gearboxes are the same. Volkswagen Group uses several variants, and the repair scope and cost depend entirely on which one your car has.
DQ200 (dry clutch). The smaller, lighter unit fitted to most compact Audi and VW models with smaller engines. If your car has a 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 or 1.5 litre TSI or TDI engine and it is a hatchback, small SUV or compact sedan, there is a very high chance it runs the DQ200 dry clutch. On a DQ200 a recon mechatronic unit is S$1,400 (6-month warranty) and a new dual clutch is S$1,650. Common DQ200 cars in Singapore include the Audi A1 and A3, VW Polo and base Golf, SEAT Ibiza and Leon, and Skoda Octavia and Fabia.
DQ250, DQ381, DQ500 and other wet-clutch variants. The higher-torque units found in more powerful Audi and VW models, the 2.0 TSI and TDI engines, GTI, Cupra, RS and S line performance cars. More robust than the DQ200, but not immune to mechatronic faults and clutch wear. A recon mechatronic unit for these starts from S$2,200 (6-month warranty).

Not every Audi runs a DSG. Some models use a conventional automatic gearbox, and on those a full overhaul may be needed where the internal components have worn beyond what a targeted repair can address. This applies to certain A4, A5, A6, Q7 and S5 models depending on the gearbox type and condition. We have done the S5 4.2 and ZF 6-speed variants, the A6 with the 0AW unit, the A5 B8 and B8.5, the Q7, and the A4 1.8 multiple times.
Every overhaul covers all the consumable internal parts: the clutch packs, internal seals, gearbox gaskets, transmission filter, and correct-spec transmission oil. External parts like the engine, flywheel, control modules, valve body, oil pan, torque converter and autocooler are not replaced as standard. They don't need replacing if they are not faulty. We inspect them during diagnosis and only flag them if we find a problem, so you don't pay for parts your car doesn't need.

On a lot of Audi and VW cars the gearbox itself is fine and only the mechatronic has failed. The classic signs are erratic or jerky shifts, dashboard error messages, and the fault occasionally clearing after an engine restart before coming back.
