This BMW X1 runs a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter. Inside it are multiple clutch packs, each responsible for one set of gear ratios. When a clutch pack wears, the gearbox loses grip on that gear range, which shows up as a slip or a surge on gear changes.
The torque converter sits between the engine and the gearbox, transmitting the engine's power to the gearbox input shaft via a fluid coupling. Inside the torque converter is a lock-up clutch that locks the converter solid once the car is above a certain speed, improving efficiency. When the torque converter lock-up clutch wears out, the converter can no longer lock cleanly, which typically shows up as a shudder or a noise.
We removed the gearbox and stripped it down on the bench for the overhaul, and sent the owner photos of the car on the lift and the gearbox opened up. With the gearbox apart, we confirmed the overhaul price and quoted a replacement torque converter separately, since it is not part of the overhaul price. We fitted it only once the owner agreed.
The overhaul replaces all the consumable parts inside the gearbox casing: the clutches, seals, gaskets, transmission filter and transmission oil.
The torque converter and the gearbox clutch packs wear for the same underlying reason: friction surfaces that eventually wear thin from use. On high-mileage automatics we often find both the torque converter lock-up clutch and the internal clutch packs worn at the same time.
The torque converter clutch debris from a worn lock-up clutch can also circulate through the transmission fluid and accelerate wear on the clutch packs inside the main gearbox. This is one reason replacing the torque converter at the same time as a gearbox overhaul is the cleaner approach: new fluid in a clean system, rather than new packs contaminated by debris from an old converter.
