What the owner asked for

The owner asked us about a servicing package and booked the BMW X1 in for a service. It came in at 29,813km, and our team carried out a major service.

The service check found the brakes and tyres fine, no oil leak and a healthy battery. But the cooling system was leaking coolant.

That is worth catching early. A car that keeps losing coolant will overheat in the end, and an overheated engine is a far bigger repair bill than a thermostat and some hoses.

We also quoted to replace the cracked right-hand door handle, and the owner approved it.

The car

The BMW X1 sDrive18i uses BMW's B38 engine, a 1.5L three-cylinder turbo petrol. This one had covered just 29,813km.

Like any car, it relies on rubber and plastic in the cooling system: hoses, connectors and seals. These parts age with time and heat, not only with kilometres. Every drive warms the system up, it cools again once the car is parked, and Singapore's heat never takes a season off. So low mileage alone does not rule out a coolant leak.

How we diagnosed it

Our standard process for any coolant leak is a pressure test of the cooling system. Applying pressure to the system and watching where it drops is the proper way to find a coolant leak, rather than guessing from the one wet spot visible from above. On a BMW we pair it with ISTA, BMW's own diagnostic system, which reads the fault memory and the live coolant temperature.

On this X1 the leak turned up during the major service check. We quoted the cooling system repair separately from the service items: the thermostat, the water pump, two coolant hoses, fresh coolant and the labour. That way the owner could see exactly what the leak would cost before deciding. The owner went ahead with the repair at the same visit.

Why this happens on a BMW X1

Heat is what wears a cooling system out. The coolant heats up on every drive and cools down again when the car is parked. Hoses, connectors and seals expand and contract with every one of those cycles. Over time they harden, and a seal face or a hose collar can start to weep.

A worn water pump can fail without much warning. The best time to replace one that is showing wear is during a cooling system job, while the coolant is already drained and the system is open.

Cooling parts fitted when a car is built have all seen the same years and the same heat cycles. When one starts to leak, it makes sense to check the others while the system is open.

What we did

We drained the coolant and replaced the cooling system parts together, and completed the major service on the same visit.

Cooling system:

  • Replaced the thermostat.
  • Replaced two coolant hoses.
  • Replaced the water pump.
  • Refilled with fresh coolant to the correct level.

Major service:

  • Engine oil and filter change with Shell 4.5L.
  • Throttle body clean.
  • All three spark plugs replaced (this is a 3-cylinder engine).
  • Transmission oil change.
  • Brake fluid change.
  • Aircon cabin filter replaced.
  • Engine air filter replaced.

We also replaced the cracked right-hand door handle, which the owner had approved.

The car was then ready to collect.

Check your coolant reservoir level once a month. It takes 30 seconds. If the level is dropping between checks, you have a slow leak somewhere that should be found before it gets worse.

Do not let the coolant go stale. Old coolant becomes acidic and attacks the plastic and rubber components inside the cooling system faster than fresh coolant does. Changing it on schedule extends the life of the thermostat, hoses and water pump.

If your BMW X1 has never had its cooling system checked, ask for a pressure test at the next service. Finding a small weep early is a straightforward repair. A cracked hose or failed thermostat that goes undetected until the car overheats is a much larger problem.
