The owner brought the BMW X1 in for a routine service and asked us to look over the car while it was in.
Brake pads wear slowly. Some drivers only find out when a warning comes on or the brakes start to squeal, and by then the discs may be worn too.

Pads and discs are wear parts. How fast each axle wears depends on the car and how it is driven, and Singapore's stop-start traffic is hard on brakes.

Ask for a brake check at every service, front and rear separately. A number like 20% gives you time to plan the job, instead of waiting for the dashboard warning.
If you hear grinding, book in straight away. Grinding can mean the pads are down to metal, which can damage the discs with every stop. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which is why it is worth changing on schedule in Singapore's humid weather.
