What the owner reported

The Alpina B7 is built around a specific ride character. It is a large, fast luxury saloon, and its air suspension is what gives it that quiet, controlled float over rough surfaces. When the air suspension starts to fail, that character changes. The car may sit lower on one end, ride harder over bumps, or show warnings on the iDrive screen. On this car, the owner knew something was not right and brought it in to be properly diagnosed and sorted.

The car

The BMW Alpina B7 is a hand-built ultra-luxury saloon produced by Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen in Bavaria and sold as a BMW. It differs from the standard 7 Series in several ways: the Alpina-tuned engine, the distinctive multi-spoke Alpina wheels, the gold coach pinstripes running the length of the body, and the burl wood interior trim. It is a rare car in Singapore, and this one arrived in British Racing Green with all the signature Alpina details intact.

This B7 came fitted with an air suspension system on all four corners. The air springs replace conventional steel springs and allow the ride height and damping to adjust continuously based on speed and road conditions. It is sophisticated, and when it ages, it does not fail dramatically, it just gradually stops doing its job properly.

What we found

We inspected all four corners on the lift. The air suspension struts had aged to the point where replacement was the correct approach. On this B7, the condition of the struts across all four corners was consistent, so replacing the full set was what we recommended and what the owner approved.

Why air suspension struts wear out

Air suspension struts combine a conventional shock absorber with an air spring, which is a flexible rubber bladder that holds pressurised air. Over time and mileage, the rubber degrades, the air lines and valves can develop slow leaks, and the internal damping fluid in the shock absorber breaks down. The system may lose its ability to hold correct ride height, or the compressor has to work harder to compensate. When the struts are worn, the car rides differently, sits unevenly, and the compressor runs more than it should.

Singapore conditions are not kind to rubber components. Heat, humidity and the way our roads combine smooth expressways with sharp speed bumps accelerate the ageing process. A B7 that has been here for several years needs its suspension components looked at properly.

What we did

We replaced all four air suspension struts with quality parts. Front and rear were done together so the car would have consistent, matched behaviour across all four corners once complete.

On the same visit, the cooling system was also attended to and the fuel pump was replaced. These were separate items on the same job, giving the owner a comprehensive visit rather than multiple trips for related maintenance items.

Once all work was complete, the car was road tested before handover.

What BMW Alpina B7 air suspension replacement costs in Singapore

The cost depends on which components need replacing and what parts specification you choose. On this B7 all four air suspension struts were replaced. We quote each item before any work begins, so the owner approves the full scope before we start. WhatsApp us with your car details and the symptoms you are seeing, and we can advise what an inspection would involve and give you an honest quote.

Keeping an Alpina B7 air suspension in good condition

Have the suspension inspected regularly rather than waiting for a warning light or a noticeable change in ride. Warning lights are a late sign. An earlier one is a gradual change in how the car rides, especially if it feels firmer over bumps than it used to, or if it sits unevenly after sitting overnight. If the air compressor is running more than usual, that is worth checking too. On a car like the B7, where the air suspension is central to what makes it drive the way it should, early attention is far less disruptive than waiting until the system fails outright.

BMW Alpina B7 air suspension: common questions

How much does BMW Alpina B7 air suspension replacement cost in Singapore?

The cost depends on which components need replacing and whether you are doing a partial or full set. On this B7 all four struts were replaced. We quote each item individually before any work begins, so you know exactly what you are paying for. WhatsApp us with your car details and we can advise.

What are the symptoms of failing air suspension on a BMW Alpina?

The most common signs are the car sitting lower than normal, particularly at one end, a firmer or harsher ride than the car had before, a suspension warning on the iDrive screen, and the air compressor running more than usual. The car may also sit unevenly when parked overnight and self-correct on startup as the compressor tries to compensate for leaking struts.

Do you replace all four air suspension struts at once on a BMW Alpina B7?

On this B7, the condition across all four corners was consistent, so replacing the full set was the right call. We inspected all four, found them all at a similar stage of wear, and recommended replacing the complete set so the car would have matched behaviour front and rear. Whether a full or partial replacement makes sense on your car depends on the inspection findings.

Why choose an independent workshop for BMW Alpina air suspension work?

We carry ISTA diagnostics, the same system BMW and Alpina dealers use, so we can read and clear the suspension-related fault codes properly, not just replace parts by guesswork. We inspect the full system, quote every item before we start, use quality parts, and road test the car before handover. The owner gets thorough work and a clear breakdown of what was done and why.
