The figures are from our invoices. Scheduled maintenance follows the requirements for your car's engine, gearbox and model year; other repairs are assessed from symptoms, inspection and diagnostic results rather than a universal age or mileage. The notes under each repair are general guidance for cars driven in Singapore, not statistics.

Gearbox oil and ATF changes on the Lexus GS

This is among the repair work our GS invoices record most often. On the bill, this item typically came to about $200 (middle half $200 to $250, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

Gearbox oil lubricates moving parts, carries heat away and supports hydraulic control inside an automatic transmission. Degraded or low fluid can show up as hesitant engagement, rough shifts, slipping or a burnt smell. Leaving the cause unchecked can increase heat and wear, turning a fluid service or small leak repair into deeper gearbox work.

We use specialist diagnostic tools to scan for gearbox faults, then road-test shift quality, inspect fluid condition and trace leaks to their source. We document the findings and give you an honest quote before work starts, recommending the correct fluid and filter service or a failed seal rather than condemning the whole gearbox.

Service interval: Follow the interval and fluid specification for your gearbox and model year; they differ between gearbox types even within one model, and we confirm them for your car. Where the maker lists no change for the life of the car, ask us whether a preventive change makes sense for your gearbox and driving.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Use the specified fluid and fill procedure, with the filter where your gearbox has a serviceable one, and avoid hard launches while the gearbox is cold. Fresh fluid is maintenance, not a cure for a gearbox that is already faulty. Early signs: a burnt smell, dark fluid, shifts that have become rough.

Singapore driving, and what it does to the GS

Local conditions play a big part in the wear we see. General guidance for cars driven in Singapore, not a statistic from our invoices.

Stop-and-go traffic. Singapore driving is mostly stop-and-go between traffic lights and in the expressway crawl. In our experience that is what wears brake pads and discs, gearbox fluid and engine mountings fastest, and it works a dual-clutch gearbox hard. Accelerate and brake gently, leave a gap so you roll instead of stopping, and use engine braking on slopes.

Heat and humidity. Under-bonnet temperatures stay high all year round, which is hard on batteries, rubber seals and hoses, and plastic cooling parts. Park in shade where you can, keep the coolant to specification, and have the battery tested at every service.

The aircon runs every day. When the engine is cut the cooling coil stays wet. Owners often tell us about a musty smell at start-up; in our experience that comes from the wet coil, and basement car parks make it worse because the air there is even more humid. Switching the compressor off shortly before you park and letting the fan run until the air is no longer cold helps the coil dry out. Change the cabin filter on schedule, and have the coil cleaned if the smell has set in.

Short trips. Short hops with the aircon on never bring the engine up to temperature for long and can leave the battery short of charge. Give the car a longer run where you can, and change the oil by time as well as mileage, with oil meeting the maker's specification and viscosity.

Malaysia trips and long jams. In a long Causeway or Tuas jam, keep a gap and move in steps rather than creeping on the brake. What to do depends on the gearbox fitted, not the badge, so check yours. With a torque-converter automatic (most BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo automatics, the Cayenne, and older Tiptronic Porsches) D with your foot on the brake is fine for a queue; N with the handbrake is for a longer standstill. With a dual-clutch gearbox (Porsche PDK as on the Macan, Panamera and the sports cars, Volkswagen DSG, Audi S tronic, the 7G-DCT in the smaller Mercedes-Benz models, and some MINI and BMW variants) creeping on a slipping clutch builds heat, so hold the brake fully, cover each gap in one go, and use N or P with the handbrake when stationary. Never select P while the car is still moving. Fill up before the trip and fix any coolant weep first; a hot jam is where a marginal cooling system fails.

Rain, blocked drains and floods. Sunroof drains, door seals and boot seals block with leaves and grime, and water then reaches connectors and control modules under the carpet; in our experience that is behind many of the electrical faults we see. Keep the drains clear, and never drive through a flooded road: an engine that takes in water needs a proper inspection and can mean major engine work.

Car parks, humps and kerbs. Multi-storey ramps, humps and tight lots punish suspension bushes, drop links and tyre sidewalls. Take humps slowly and straight, and avoid mounting kerbs.

Our GS records run from June 2019 to September 2026; "recent" on this page means invoices dated 2023 onwards.
Retail invoices only: fleet and leasing contract work is excluded.
Every repair price is that item's own line on the bill, GST included; other work on the same bill is left out. On most of our bills that line carries parts and fitting together; a few jobs bill labour separately, and that labour is not in the item price. A servicing-only visit is the whole bill.
Every statistical money figure comes from the recent invoices; how often work appears uses every year in our records.
We show the median and the middle half (the 25th to 75th percentile), rounded to the nearest $50.
Jobs priced only in a remark (not on the invoice total) are excluded, so some big jobs are missing.
The inspection, schedule and maintenance notes under each repair are general guidance for cars driven in Singapore, not statistics from our invoices; scheduled work follows the requirements for your engine, gearbox and model year.
