What the owner brought the Honda Freed in for

The owner brought the Honda Freed in for a major service. The car was due for several items including air and cabin filter replacement, spark plug replacement and a throttle body clean.

Whenever we service a car we also do a thorough underbody inspection while the car is on the lift. On this Freed we found something the owner did not know about: oil fouling on the transmission casing underneath the car, pointing to a transmission oil leak.

The car

The Honda Freed is a compact multi-purpose vehicle powered by a Honda Earth Dreams petrol engine. The engine uses a throttle body to control airflow into the intake manifold, a system that works cleanly when new but accumulates carbon and oil residue over time, reducing throttle response and smoothness.

The Honda Freed's engine uses four spark plugs, one per cylinder. Worn plugs lead to misfires, hesitant acceleration and increased fuel consumption. The air and cabin filters both need periodic replacement to maintain engine breathing and cabin air quality.

Routine major services on the Honda Freed also include checking the undercarriage, where transmission oil leaks can develop silently and go unnoticed without a proper lift inspection.

What we found

We removed the throttle body and inspected it. The bore and butterfly valve had a build-up of carbon and oil residue, which is normal after extended use but restricts airflow if left uncleaned.

The air filter was clogged and no longer flowing freely. The cabin filter was similarly dirty. Both were well past their replacement point.

The four spark plugs were worn, with the electrodes showing normal wear consistent with extended use.

On the underside, we found oil fouling on the transmission casing. The oil residue had spread across the casing surface, which is a clear sign of a transmission oil leak that needed attention.

Why a thorough underbody check matters at every major service

Transmission oil leaks on the Honda Freed can develop gradually and remain invisible without lifting the car for a proper inspection. Oil seeping from a gasket or seal coats the casing and surrounding components, and can slowly lower the fluid level in the transmission if left unchecked.

A low transmission fluid level increases wear on the internal components and can eventually lead to gearbox problems that are far more expensive than catching the leak early. Finding it during a routine major service, before any symptoms develop, is exactly when you want to catch it.

What we did

Major service:

  • Removed the throttle body, cleaned the bore and butterfly valve, and refitted it.
  • Replaced the engine air filter with a new unit.
  • Replaced the cabin filter with a new unit.
  • Replaced all four spark plugs.

Underbody:

  • Found a transmission oil leak on the underside.

We showed the owner the worn parts and the underside findings.

Before and after

Before

  • Dirty throttle body with carbon and oil residue reducing airflow
  • Clogged engine air filter restricting intake
  • Dirty cabin filter reducing cabin air quality
  • Worn spark plugs due for replacement
  • Transmission oil leak on the underside, going unnoticed

After

  • Throttle body cleaned, airflow restored
  • Fresh engine air filter fitted
  • New cabin filter fitted
  • Four new spark plugs installed
  • Transmission oil leak found and shown to owner for follow-up

What a Honda Freed major service costs in Singapore

Major service cost depends on how many items need attention. We go through each item with you and quote each one before any work begins. You decide what to proceed with.

The transmission oil leak is a separate quote item once we inspect the exact leak point. We do not bundle surprises into a flat rate. Everything is transparent and approved before we start.

Keeping your Honda Freed running well

Air and cabin filters on the Honda Freed should be checked and replaced periodically, especially given Singapore's dusty urban environment. A clogged air filter reduces engine power and fuel economy. A dirty cabin filter means musty air inside the car.

Throttle body cleaning at regular intervals keeps acceleration smooth and prevents hesitation or rough idling. Spark plug replacement at the recommended interval avoids misfires and hard starting.

A lift inspection at every service is the most reliable way to catch undercarriage leaks early. Transmission oil leaks found early are a straightforward seal or gasket replacement. Left to develop, they can affect gearbox fluid levels and eventually lead to more serious transmission repairs.

Honda Freed major service: common questions

How much does a Honda Freed major service cost in Singapore?

The cost depends on which items are due and what is found during the inspection. We go through each item with you and quote before any work begins. WhatsApp us your car's details for a guide.

What is included in a Honda Freed major service?

A major service typically covers the engine oil and filter, air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs and throttle body cleaning. We also do a full underbody inspection while the car is on the lift, which is how we found the transmission oil leak on this Freed.

What causes a Honda Freed throttle body to get dirty?

Normal engine operation allows oil vapour and carbon deposits to build up inside the throttle body over time, especially on engines with a crankcase ventilation system. The deposits coat the bore and the butterfly valve, reducing airflow. Cleaning it at regular service intervals keeps the throttle response sharp and prevents rough idling.

Is a Honda Freed transmission oil leak serious?

It depends on the source and how long it has been leaking. A transmission oil leak found early, as on this Freed, is typically a seal or gasket replacement. Left unchecked, the fluid level can drop and begin to cause wear on the transmission internals. Finding it at a routine service is the best outcome.

How often should the spark plugs be replaced on a Honda Freed?

Spark plug service intervals vary by plug type and driving conditions. Our team can check the condition of your plugs and advise when replacement is due. Signs that plugs need attention include hesitant acceleration, a rough idle or harder starting.
