Mercedes-Benz A180: Jammed Waterpump Led to Belt Failure and Coolant Loss

This Mercedes-Benz A180 broke down when its belt fell off on the road. The owner arranged a tow and called us first thing in the morning. Diagnosis showed the waterpump had seized, which caused the belt to shed and the cooling system to fail. We replaced the waterpump, belt, tensioner, spare tank, coolant pipes and a weak battery. The car was tested, cleaned and ready for collection the following afternoon.

What happened

The owner messaged us in the morning: 'got coolant problems with my car, towing to your workshop in an hour.' The A180 had lost its belt on the road. We arranged the tow and prepared for the car to arrive.

The car

The Mercedes-Benz A180 is a compact petrol car common in Singapore. Its serpentine belt drives the alternator, waterpump and other accessories. When the waterpump seizes, it locks up and the belt either breaks or sheds. Once the belt is off, the cooling system stops circulating and the car overheats quickly. The alternator also stops charging the battery.

What we found

When the car arrived, our team sent a video and photo summary to the owner straight away.

The belt had fallen off completely. The waterpump had jammed, which locked it and caused the belt to shed. With the cooling system no longer circulating, the car overheated and the expansion tank cracked under pressure. Several coolant hoses and pipes had also been stressed by the heat.

Why a seized waterpump is a cascade failure

A waterpump failure rarely announces itself before it causes damage. The pump bearings wear gradually. When they fail completely, the pump seizes mid-drive, the belt jams against the locked pulley and sheds within seconds.

From that moment, there is no coolant circulation. The engine temperature climbs in minutes. On this A180, the overheating cracked the expansion tank and stressed the coolant pipes before the owner could pull over.

The alternator also stopped the moment the belt came off, so the battery was running the car on reserve charge. After the repair, the battery tested at 29% health.

The fix had to address every part that was damaged or at risk, not just the waterpump itself.

What we replaced

We replaced all parts damaged or at risk from the failure:

Waterpump, tensioner and idle pulley, to restore the drive train and prevent an early repeat failure.

Belt, expansion tank, expansion tank cap, and the coolant pipes connecting the spare tank, including the turbo coolant pipes and turbo oil pipes, which are disturbed during this job and can leak if reused.

The owner chose to skip the radiator at this visit.

After the repair, we tested the car and confirmed everything was good. The battery had dropped to 29% health from the alternator being offline, so we replaced it with a Varta AGM unit before collection.

The car went through a full wash before the owner collected it.

Removed parts from Mercedes-Benz A180 waterpump and belt job laid out at 1 Car Service Workshop

Before and after

Before

  • Belt shed mid-drive; car towed in
  • Jammed waterpump, cracked expansion tank, failed coolant pipes
  • Battery at 29% from alternator offline

After

  • Waterpump, belt, tensioner replaced
  • Expansion tank, coolant pipes, turbo pipes replaced
  • Battery replaced; car tested and confirmed good

What this repair cost

The total for this job was $2,300 nett. That covers the waterpump, tensioner, idle pulley, belt, expansion tank and cap, coolant pipes, turbo coolant and oil pipes, and a new Varta AGM 70Ah battery.

The radiator was not replaced at this visit.

How to avoid a waterpump failure

The waterpump and the serpentine belt are usually replaced together because the labour overlaps and both wear at similar rates. If the belt or tensioner is worn, the waterpump bearings are often not far behind.

Signs to watch for: a high-pitched squeal from the engine bay (a slipping or glazed belt), coolant level dropping without a visible leak, a temperature gauge creeping higher than usual, or a subtle grinding from the front of the engine.

Any coolant warning on the dashboard should be treated as stop-immediately serious, especially in Singapore's heat. Driving even a short distance on a failed cooling system can turn a belt job into an engine rebuild.

Warning signs to watch for on your Mercedes

Coolant warning or belt noise on your Mercedes? Do not drive it further.

Mercedes waterpump and belt: common questions

Can I drive to the workshop if the belt has shed?

No. Once the belt is off, the cooling system stops immediately. Driving even a short distance risks overheating the engine and causes further damage. The right move is to stop safely and arrange a tow.

Why were the turbo pipes replaced along with the waterpump?

The turbo coolant and oil pipes run through the same area as the waterpump. When the engine is stripped to replace the pump, these pipes are disturbed and can develop leaks if reused. Replacing them at the same time avoids a separate, expensive job later.

Why did the battery fail as well?

The serpentine belt also drives the alternator. When the belt shed, the alternator stopped charging. The battery was found at 29% health after the repair. At that level a battery can fail to start the car, so we replaced it.
