The Mercedes GLC coupe was coming up due for a major service, and the owner wanted everything done properly in one visit. They also mentioned the car felt slightly less settled over bumps than it used to, but were not sure if it was just the roads or something to actually check.
We advised them to bring the car in so we could do the service and lift it for a proper undercarriage inspection at the same time.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe pairs its engine with an automatic gearbox. The spark plugs need replacing at the correct service interval to keep the engine running cleanly.
The suspension uses multi-link arms at the front and rear. The front lower control arms take a lot of loading from the Singapore roads and the arm bushings harden and crack over time. When they do, the car feels less precise over bumps and in corners, and the steering can feel slightly vague.
During the service lift inspection we found the front lower suspension control arms were worn. The bushings had hardened and there was visible movement in the arms when we checked them. This explained the slightly unsettled feel the owner had noticed.
The service items were also all well overdue: the spark plugs showed normal wear but were at the right mileage interval for replacement, the air filter was clogged, the cabin filter was dirty, and the gearbox oil had darkened and needed changing.
Mercedes petrol engines with twin-spark cylinder heads (two plugs per cylinder) are sensitive to spark plug condition. Worn plugs cause a slight misfire that the driver may not notice as a jerk, but which shows up as a rough idle or slightly flat acceleration. Replacing all eight at the correct interval is the right approach.
Front suspension arm bushings are rubber, and Singapore's heat ages them faster than in cooler climates. By the time the driver notices the vague handling, the bushings are usually already well worn. Catching them at a service inspection rather than waiting for a noise or a handling complaint means a smaller job.
