Mercedes S500 Workshop Singapore: AMG S63-Size Brakes, Coolant Leak and a Full Check

This Mercedes-Benz S500 came in for a service and a full check. The owner had a check engine light on, a coolant leak and an aircon that was not cold after 20 minutes. Our check found the car had been modified with AMG S63-size brakes, so standard S500 brake parts were too small to fit. We quoted every item, the owner chose what to do, and collection was offered for that Saturday.

What the owner brought the car in for

The owner booked his S500 in for a service and asked us to look through the whole car. He had a check engine light on and a coolant leak. The aircon was not cold even after 20 minutes. He also wanted the suspension and tyres checked.

The car

This is a Mercedes-Benz S500 on air suspension. At some point before it came to us, it had been modified with AMG S63-size brakes. That matters: brake parts ordered for a standard S500 are too small for this car.

What our check found

The check engine light was a coolant leak warning. The coolant spare tank and cap, its hoses, the radiator hoses, a coolant feed line and a cover at the cylinder head all needed replacing. Once the work started, our team found the water pump, thermostat, a heater hose and an auxiliary pump hose also needed replacing to stop further leaks.

The front brake pads were finished and the rears had about 30% left. The front and rear air suspension covers were cracked, and so were the front lower arm bush and stabilizer link bush. The front tyres were worn out and the rears were close. The aircon gas was a bit low, so we topped it up.

When we took out the ignition coils to fit new spark plugs, a coil broke into small pieces. The coils had been in for a long time and the plastic had stuck in the engine, so they could not go back in.

Why the brake parts did not fit

The brakes on this S500 had been upgraded to AMG S63 size. When we put a standard S500 disc and pad next to the car's own, the car's were clearly bigger. Standard S500 parts would not fit.

We showed the owner the photos and requoted the brake pads and discs to S63 size, front and rear, before any brake parts went on.

What we did

The owner chose his items from our itemised quote and we got to work. We serviced the car with original spark plugs and replaced six ignition coils. We replaced the coolant parts, including the water pump and thermostat. We fitted S63-size brake pads and discs front and rear, replaced the front control arms and the suspension parts he approved, and fitted new tyres.

While the engine area was open, our team flagged the engine mounts and the engine oil cooler as old. The owner chose to replace them now, with an original engine and gearbox mount set and an original oil cooler.

We also pointed out a cracked front lip trim. It is decoration only, not a safety item, and the owner chose to leave it for now. The car was ready, and washed, for the owner to collect on the day he chose.

Mercedes S500 service and repair costs

A job like this depends on what the check finds. We priced every item separately, often with an original and an OEM option, so the owner could choose line by line. When the brakes turned out to be S63 size, we requoted them before going ahead.

Keeping an S500 in good shape

Do not ignore a check engine light or a dropping coolant level. Get it checked so you know what the warning is about.

If your car has been modified, tell us when you book. On this S500 the brakes were not the standard size, and knowing that early means the right parts get ordered.

Mercedes S500 service: common questions

Why did standard S500 brake parts not fit this car?

This S500 had been modified with AMG S63-size brakes. The car's own disc and pad were bigger than the standard S500 parts, so we requoted to S63-size pads and discs front and rear.

Why were the ignition coils replaced during a spark plug change?

On this car a coil broke into small pieces when we removed it. The coils had been in for a long time and the plastic had stuck in the engine, so they could not be reused. The owner approved six new coils.

How much does a Mercedes S500 service and repair cost in Singapore?

It depends on what the check finds. We quote every item separately, often with an original and an OEM option, and you choose what goes ahead. WhatsApp us your car model for a quote.

How long did this S500 job take?

The car came in on Monday 12 October. We offered collection on Saturday 17 October, and the owner chose to collect on Monday 19 October.

Is it worth servicing a Mercedes S500 outside the authorised dealer?

Yes, if the workshop diagnoses properly and tells you what it finds. On this S500 our team sent the owner photos of the findings and a priced list before any work started, and the owner decided what to go ahead with.

Do you use XENTRY for Mercedes-Benz diagnostics?

Yes. XENTRY is the dealer-level diagnostic system for Mercedes-Benz, and our team uses it to read the car's systems before recommending a repair.
