It depends on the car: on most models the dashboard has to come out to reach the coil, so labour is the biggest part of the bill, and a continental car with the newer refrigerant costs more to recharge than an older Japanese model. I had a positive experience with 1-Car Service for a cooling coil replacement. Jin was professional and never pressured me into the repair during the initial evaluation, even topping up my gas so I could take time to decide. When I returned for the fix, he kept me updated with photos, and patiently explained and answered my questions (even using a video for illustration), which was very reassuring as the dashboard had to be removed. The job was finished a day ahead of schedule, and the car was returned washed and cleaned.
Recommended by a friend, I brought my Nissan Qashqai to diagnose as aircon not cold. Jin and team suggested to top up gas first as not sure if it was due to low gas or leakage. 2 days later, brought the car back as proven gas leakage. Had to leave car overnight to replace the cooling coil as they observe no leakage in the bonnet area. Throughout the replacement process, they sent me photos to show the repair process. The whole dashboard had to be removed in the replacement process while making sure all other electronics and wiring are not affected. Glad that the team was experience and able to replace and get everything back in working order within the next day. Happy with the repair work and professionalism.

The cooling coil, also called the evaporator, sits inside the dashboard. Refrigerant expands inside it, the coil turns ice cold, and the blower pushes cabin air across it. That is where your cold air actually comes from. Because it lives in a damp, dark box and carries refrigerant under pressure, the coil corrodes from the inside out, and the first sign is usually a slow leak.
A slow leak is exactly why gas top-ups disappoint. The top-up restores the pressure, the aircon blows cold, and a few weeks later the gas has leaked out again. And while the gas keeps leaking out, it takes compressor oil with it, which shortens the compressor's life. If your aircon keeps needing top-ups, the honest fix is to find the leak, and on many cars the leak is the cooling coil. A cooling coil replacement is a dashboard-out job, so we never quote it on a guess. We pressure test the system, run UV dye through it and check every joint we can reach: the hoses, the seals, the condenser at the front of the car and the compressor. If dye shows up at the aircon drain under the car, or the coil weeps when the system is under pressure and nothing else does, that is the coil.
Sometimes the answer is cheaper. A leaking hose, a worn seal or a damaged condenser can be replaced without touching the dashboard. We tell you straight which one your car needs, with an itemised quote before any work starts. On continental cars we read the climate module with dealer-level diagnostics, XENTRY for Mercedes-Benz, ISTA for BMW, ODIS for Audi and Volkswagen and PIWIS for Porsche, so a sensor or flap fault is not mistaken for a leak.
On most cars the whole dashboard has to come out to reach the evaporator housing. That means the steering column, the centre console, the airbag modules, the wiring looms and the heater box, all removed and refitted. It is careful, hands-on work, and it is where a rushed job shows: rattles, a warning light from a connector left loose, or a trim clip that never goes back.
We do it properly. The coil comes out with the housing, the new coil goes in with new seals, and the expansion valve is checked or replaced at the same time, because a tired valve can starve or flood the new coil. The system is then vacuumed to pull out moisture, recharged with the correct refrigerant to the exact weight for your car, and leak tested again. Then the dashboard goes back with every clip and connector accounted for, and we send you WhatsApp photos of the old coil.
