BMW 216i Gran Tourer Engine Overhaul Singapore: Broken Piston Ring, 3 Years / 60,000 km Warranty

This 2020 BMW 216i Gran Tourer had developed a knocking sound from the engine that was getting louder over time. The owner brought it in for a diagnosis. When our team opened the engine, they found a broken piston ring. We carried out a full engine overhaul, replaced the worn flywheel and the leaking waterpump, and returned the car with a 3-year / 60,000 km warranty on the engine.

What the owner reported

The owner brought in the BMW 216i for a diagnosis. The engine had developed a knocking sound that was getting louder. The car had covered over 140,000 km.

The car

The BMW 216i Gran Tourer is a compact petrol people carrier. Like all modern BMW petrol engines, it relies on precise tolerances in the piston-cylinder interface. Piston rings seal the combustion chamber, scrape oil from the cylinder walls, and transfer heat from the piston into the cylinder bore. A broken ring allows combustion gases to escape past the piston (blow-by) and oil to enter the combustion chamber, both of which cause the characteristic deep knock that gets louder as the damage worsens.

What the engine strip-down revealed

Our technicians reproduced the knocking sound before opening the engine, then stripped it down to confirm the fault.

The diagnosis found a broken piston ring. The ring had fractured and was causing the knocking as the piston moved. The engine overhaul addressed the piston rings, valves, valve seals, and all the seals within the engine that are replaced as part of a full rebuild set.

Two additional faults were identified at the same time: the flywheel was worn and nearing the point of failure (it would have damaged the clutch had it jammed), and the waterpump was leaking. Both were photographed and shown to the owner before any additional work was approved.

Why piston rings break

Piston rings work under extreme heat and pressure every time the engine fires. At over 140,000 km, the rings on this BMW 216i had completed hundreds of millions of cycles. Metal fatigue, oil quality over the engine's life, and the operating temperature all affect how long rings last.

A piston ring failure is not always the result of a single catastrophic event. It is usually the accumulation of wear over high mileage that thins and weakens the ring until it finally cracks.

The flywheel and waterpump failures were independent: the flywheel was worn from normal mileage and the waterpump was leaking from its seals. All three were found at the same strip-down and repaired in the same visit.

What we replaced

Engine overhaul completed, including the piston rings and all overhaul seals. Engine oil and transmission oil were included in the package.

Flywheel: replaced with a new unit. The old worn flywheel was photographed for the owner. A new main pulley was also fitted at no extra charge.

Waterpump: replaced with a new unit, along with the waterpump bracket, water pump hose and thermostat coolant pipes. The timing cover oil leak was also addressed.

After reassembly, our chief technician road tested the car and confirmed the engine was running well with no abnormal sounds. The owner collected the car on Oct 9 and confirmed: 'Driving feels great, no funny sound.'

Before and after

Before

  • Engine knocking sound, growing louder over months
  • Broken piston ring confirmed on strip-down
  • Worn flywheel, leaking waterpump

After

  • Full engine overhaul completed
  • New flywheel, waterpump and coolant pipes fitted
  • Road tested and confirmed good; owner: 'Driving feels great, no funny sound'

What this engine overhaul cost

The total for this BMW 216i engine overhaul was $10,500 nett. This covers the full engine overhaul, a new original flywheel, the waterpump with bracket and hoses, thermostat coolant pipes, a new main pulley, and engine and transmission oil.

The engine overhaul carries a 3 years / 60,000 km warranty.

How to protect a BMW engine from premature wear

Use a quality engine oil and change it at the correct interval. This is the single biggest factor in engine longevity. Oil that is overdue for a change loses viscosity and stops protecting the piston rings and cylinder walls properly.

An engine knock should be diagnosed before it progresses. A knock that is caught early, when it is still intermittent or mild, is typically a component-level repair. A knock that has been running for months while the part continues to break up becomes a full engine rebuild because secondary damage accumulates.

Signs your BMW engine needs attention

BMW engine knocking? The longer it runs, the worse the damage.

BMW engine overhaul: common questions

What does a full engine overhaul include?

A full engine overhaul covers the piston rings, all the overhaul seals, and the internal components that are replaced as part of the rebuild process. Engine oil and transmission oil were included in this package. We will confirm the scope for your specific engine when you WhatsApp us.

What warranty does the engine carry after the overhaul?

3 years / 60,000 km engine overhaul warranty. WhatsApp us for any questions about the warranty.

How long does a BMW engine overhaul take?

This BMW 216i came in on Sep 29 and was ready for collection on Oct 9, approximately 7 to 8 working days. Timing depends on how the engine opens and whether additional parts are needed. We keep the owner updated throughout.

Should the flywheel and waterpump always be replaced with the engine?

Not always, but on this car both were found at end of service life when the engine was stripped. The flywheel was worn and at risk of jamming and damaging the clutch; the waterpump was leaking. Doing them at the same time saves labour, since the engine must be out for the overhaul anyway.
