BMW 4 Coupe Cold-Start Knocking: Fixed with a Proper Oil Change in Singapore

The owner of a BMW 4 Series Coupe had been noticing a knocking sound when the engine was cold. It was most obvious when accelerating before the engine had fully warmed up. The knock would fade away once the oil had circulated and the engine reached operating temperature.

The owner was understandably concerned. A knocking sound from a BMW engine can mean several things, from a simple oil change to something more involved. Getting it diagnosed properly was the right first step.

We checked the engine oil level and condition using the iDrive oil monitoring system and a physical dipstick check. The oil was overdue for a change: dark, used and well past the point at which BMW's own condition monitor would flag it.

Old oil loses its film strength and its ability to maintain hydraulic pressure in tight tolerances, particularly when cold. The variable valve timing actuators and the hydraulic lash adjusters on the valvetrain both depend on clean oil at the right pressure to work quietly. Old oil, especially on cold mornings, can allow a brief drop in hydraulic pressure that produces the knocking sound the owner was hearing.

We also found the throttle body due for a clean and the brake fluid needed changing. We quoted all three items and the owner approved.

Once approved, we sorted the car properly.

• Drained the old engine oil and refilled with fresh oil to BMW specification, with a new oil filter.
• Cleaned the throttle body to restore smooth airflow and idle quality.
• Changed the brake fluid to remove old, moisture-contaminated fluid.
• Road tested the car, including cold-start behaviour, to confirm the knock was gone before handover.

The owner came back with feedback after a few days of driving: no more knocking sound, not even in cold starts. That is the confirmation a service job should earn.
