What the owner reported

The owner of a BMW 4 Series Coupe sent us a video of a knocking sound they heard when accelerating. Revving at idle did not bring it on. They asked to bring the car in the next day for us to check, and to change the brake fluid, which the car's computer said was due soon.

The engine oil had been changed with us about 5,000km earlier, in February. On the morning of the visit, the owner decided to change it again anyway. A knocking sound from a BMW engine can mean several things, from something simple to something more involved, so getting it checked was the right first step.

The car

The BMW 4 Series Coupe is the two-door version of the 3 Series platform, with sharper styling and a more driver-focused character. Like any modern BMW engine, it relies on clean oil of the right specification for the variable valve timing system and the hydraulic lash adjusters on the valvetrain.

When oil is old and has lost its viscosity, hydraulic pressure in the valvetrain can drop slightly during cold starts before the oil has fully circulated. That is why the oil is one of the first things worth checking when a BMW knocks from cold.

What we found

We checked the car over and sent the owner our recommendations with prices. Besides the engine oil and filter the owner wanted, a throttle body clean (to keep acceleration smooth) and the brake fluid were both due for servicing.

Our check also flagged the battery and the front and rear brake pads and discs for replacement. The owner chose the oil, the throttle body clean and the brake fluid, and left the battery and brakes for now.

Why the knock stopped

The owner put it down to the oil change. That may well be right, but the old oil had only done about 5,000km, and the throttle body was cleaned at the same visit. So we cannot point to one cause.

What the case does show is the value of starting with the simple items. The VANOS variable valve timing system and the hydraulic lash adjusters need clean oil at the correct viscosity to build pressure quickly on startup. When the oil is degraded, there can be a brief moment on a cold start before the hydraulic parts are fully pressurised, and that can be heard as a knock. Ruling that out is far cheaper than chasing an engine fault that may not exist.

What we did

Once the owner approved, we did the work.

  • Drained the old engine oil and refilled with fresh oil, with a new oil filter.
  • Cleaned the throttle body.
  • Changed the brake fluid.

Then the car was ready for collection. The next day our team checked in. The owner said there was no more knocking when accelerating, even with the engine cold.
