Ferrari 488 GTB Engine Overhaul: Coolant in the Oil, Put Right

This 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB kept overheating and losing coolant. When we opened it up, the oil had turned the colour of milk tea. Here is what was wrong and how we rebuilt it.

What the owner reported

The car came to us because it kept overheating. The temperature would climb on a drive, and the coolant level kept dropping. It had been topped up more than once, but the coolant just kept disappearing with no obvious puddle on the ground.

That combination, heat plus vanishing coolant with no external leak, is a warning sign on any engine and a serious one on a Ferrari. Coolant that is not leaking onto the floor is usually going somewhere it should not, and on a high-performance V8 the cost of finding out late is very high. The owner wanted a straight answer on what was wrong and what it would take to fix.

The car

The car is a 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB with the 3.9 litre twin-turbo V8. It is a high-output engine that runs under real thermal stress, and it depends on its cooling system and its oil working perfectly together. The coolant keeps the heat in check; the oil lubricates and also helps carry heat away.

When those two systems start mixing, the engine is in trouble fast. There is very little margin in a forced-induction V8 like this. Small problems do not stay small, which is why a creeping temperature gauge and falling coolant should never be brushed off as a top-up job.

How we diagnosed it

We began by dismantling the engine to see what was actually happening inside, rather than guessing from outside. The moment the oil came out, the diagnosis was clear. It was the colour of milk tea, a creamy light brown. That colour means only one thing: coolant has mixed into the engine oil.

So the coolant was not leaking onto the road. It was leaking inside the engine, into the oil. We filmed the milky oil and sent it to the owner so he could see it for himself. From there we traced the path of the internal leak and inspected the parts the contaminated oil had been running through.

Why this is so damaging

Milk-tea oil is not just a cosmetic problem. Once coolant mixes into the oil, the oil loses its ability to lubricate. Every part that relies on a clean film of oil is now running on a watery, contaminated mix.

In this engine the lost lubrication had already caused damage in the cylinder head and the camshaft. That is why we could not simply flush the oil and reseal a leak. The internal coolant intrusion had been going on long enough, masked by repeated coolant top-ups, that the engine internals were affected. At that point a full engine overhaul was the only proper repair, because the engine cannot be allowed to keep running with coolant in it.

What we did

We carried out a full engine overhaul.

  • Stripped the engine completely so every affected part could be inspected.
  • Repaired and replaced the damaged cylinder head and camshaft components.
  • Sourced genuine Ferrari parts for the rebuild. The big parts took around a month to reach us.
  • Rebuilt the engine over about two weeks once the parts were in.
  • Refilled with 8.5 litres of Mobil 1 and tested before handover.

We kept the owner updated with photos at each stage, from the dismantled engine to the genuine parts arriving to the rebuilt engine going back in. The engine overhaul came to around $26,000, and it carries our 3 year or 60,000km warranty. The coolant parts outside the engine were quoted separately so the owner could see exactly what each part of the job covered.

What a Ferrari 488 engine overhaul costs in Singapore

A Ferrari 488 engine overhaul is a major job, and the figure follows the internal damage found. This one came to about $26,000, covering the cylinder head and camshaft work, genuine Ferrari parts and 8.5 litres of Mobil 1, with a 3 year or 60,000km warranty. Coolant parts outside the engine were quoted on top.

What moves the price on an engine like this is how far the damage has spread and which genuine parts are needed. Caught at the first sign of overheating, the bill can be much smaller. Left to run with coolant in the oil, the damage reaches the head and camshaft, and the repair becomes a full overhaul. The single biggest cost saver is acting early, before the internals are affected.

How to avoid this

On a high-performance car, the temperature gauge is your early warning. If it starts creeping above normal, or the coolant level keeps dropping, stop driving and get it checked. Do not keep topping up coolant and hoping. Coolant that disappears with no puddle is usually leaking somewhere inside the engine, and every drive after that adds damage.

Regular servicing matters too. Fresh oil, a healthy cooling system and an eye on the early signs are what keep a small coolant issue from becoming a full engine overhaul. Once the oil has turned milky, servicing alone cannot save the engine, so the goal is always to catch it before that point.

Ferrari 488 engine overhaul: common questions

How much does a Ferrari 488 engine overhaul cost in Singapore?

This Ferrari 488 engine overhaul came to about $26,000. The figure on another engine depends on the internal damage found once it is opened. This job was about $26,000, covering cylinder head and camshaft work, genuine Ferrari parts and Mobil 1 oil, with a 3 year or 60,000km warranty. Coolant parts outside the engine are quoted separately.

What does milk-tea coloured oil mean?

Milk-tea or creamy light-brown oil means coolant has mixed into the engine oil. On a Ferrari 488 it points to an internal coolant leak. It is serious because the contaminated oil can no longer lubricate properly, which damages internal parts like the cylinder head and camshaft.

Why does my Ferrari keep losing coolant with no leak on the ground?

If coolant keeps dropping but there is no puddle, it is usually leaking inside the engine rather than outside. On this 488 the coolant was leaking into the oil. It needs to be opened and inspected, because topping up only hides the problem while the damage continues.

Can an engine overhaul be avoided if I catch overheating early?

Often yes. Caught at the first sign of overheating or coolant loss, the repair can be much smaller and cheaper. The full overhaul on this car was needed because coolant had been entering the oil long enough to damage the head and camshaft. Acting early is the biggest cost saver.

How long does a Ferrari engine overhaul take?

On this 488, the genuine parts took about a month to arrive, then the rebuild took around two weeks. Timelines depend on parts availability and the extent of the damage. We confirm the timeline once the engine is opened and inspected.
