What brought the car in

The owner brought the E-Class in at 73,255 km and asked us to check it properly and service everything that needed it. They also asked us to look at the brake pads.

The car

This is a Mercedes-Benz E-Class at 73,255 km. At this point many cars need more than a routine service. Rubber seals, hoses and gaskets have been through years of heat cycles, and brakes and suspension parts wear with every kilometre. A proper check on the hoist shows what needs doing now and what can wait.

What the inspection found

With the car on the hoist, our team found an engine oil leak and a coolant leak, and filmed both for the owner. The front and rear brakes were worn out. The tyres were fine, and the battery tested at 62%.

Our team quoted the oil filter housing, the engine oil sump, the oil level sensor and the gearbox oil sump to stop the oil leak. The oil filter housing job needs a manifold removed, and the sump job needs the subframe dropped. For the coolant leak, the quote covered a coolant line, the expansion tank cap and a small hose.

Two days into the job, our team saw that the suspension parts were starting to age and sent the owner photos and videos. The absorbers were aged, not broken, and our team said so.

Why leaks and worn parts show up together

Seals, gaskets and hoses age with heat and time. In Singapore's heat an engine bay works hard, so rubber parts harden and start to seep. When one leak shows up, it is worth checking the rest of the engine while the car is on the hoist.

Fixing everything you find in one visit saves you coming back for the next leak a few months later.

What we did

The owner approved the full list. We replaced the oil filter housing set, the engine oil sump set, the oil level sensor and the gearbox oil sump with a new drain plug. On the coolant side we replaced the coolant line, the expansion tank cap and the small hose, and refilled the coolant.

We fitted new front and rear brake pads, discs and sensors. The owner also asked for a new battery, as the old one was about five years old. The service items were done too: spark plugs, air and aircon filters, throttle body cleaning, and transmission, power steering, rear axle and brake fluids.

After seeing the suspension quote, the owner chose which parts to replace. Our team installed them on 5 October and arranged a wheel alignment afterwards. The car came in on 1 October and was ready for collection on 8 October.

How to stay ahead of leaks on an older Mercedes

Look under the car where you park. Fresh oil or coolant spots mean something is seeping. Check the oil and coolant levels between services too.

A small leak caught early means fewer parts and less labour. Left alone, oil can soak into rubber parts nearby and coolant loss can lead to overheating.
