Mercedes-Benz E-Class problems we repair most often, and what they cost in Singapore

When warning lights, rough shifts, leaks or vibration appear on your E-Class, you need the actual fault found before it spreads. Our Mercedes-Benz specialist workshop uses XENTRY, documented inspections and proven repair work to diagnose it properly.

The honest answer: What do we repair most often on the E-Class, and what does each repair cost at 1 Car?

A servicing visit for the E-Class, mostly oil and filter services, is about $250 at 1 Car, whole invoice including GST (visits that also carried repair work we classify, an aircon gas top-up or aircon-service line, a tyre or wheel-alignment line, or a generic parts or labour line are not counted). Across 341 E-Class registrations in our records, the repair work we record most often is gearbox oil (ATF) change, brake pads, discs or wear sensors and water pump, thermostat, radiator or coolant leak; the table below shows what each repair item typically cost on the bill where we have enough recent priced bills. These are statistics from our own retail invoices, not a quote: Mercedes-Benz E-Class owners get an honest price on WhatsApp after we diagnose the actual fault.

Rated 4.9★ from 1,801+ Google reviews. Based on 741 retail invoices across 341 E-Class registrations in our records. Last updated September 2026. Covers the E200, E250, E300, W212 and W213 badges and chassis codes in our records.

Common repair work recorded on the E-Class: 341 registrations, real invoices

Each row is one kind of repair work, counted by the E-Class registrations whose invoices name a part in that family. The price is that item's part lines on one bill, added together, GST included, over recent bills; a labour line billed on its own and other work on the same bill are left out. Where fewer than 3 bills price the item, we quote on WhatsApp instead of guessing.

What each repair involves on the E-Class, when to inspect or replace, and what our invoices say it costs

The figures are from our invoices. Scheduled maintenance follows the requirements for your car's engine, gearbox and model year; other repairs are assessed from symptoms, inspection and diagnostic results rather than a universal age or mileage. The notes under each repair are general guidance for cars driven in Singapore, not statistics.

Gearbox oil changes on the E-Class

24% of the E-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (81 of 341, 86 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $250 (71 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

Gearbox oil lubricates internal parts, carries heat away and supports smooth hydraulic control. Degraded fluid can show up as hesitant shifts, shuddering or rough engagement. Leaving it in service can increase wear and turn maintenance into an internal repair.

We road test the shift behaviour, inspect the drained fluid and use XENTRY to check transmission data. We document the findings and give an honest quote for the fluid service or confirmed failed part before work starts.

Service interval: Follow the interval and fluid specification for your gearbox and model year; they differ between gearbox types even within one model, and we confirm them for your car. Where the maker lists no change for the life of the car, ask us whether a preventive change makes sense for your gearbox and driving.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Use the specified fluid and fill procedure, with the filter where your gearbox has a serviceable one, and avoid hard launches while the gearbox is cold. Fresh fluid is maintenance, not a cure for a gearbox that is already faulty. Early signs: a burnt smell, dark fluid, shifts that have become rough.

Brake pads, discs and wear sensors on the E-Class

22% of the E-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (76 of 341, 93 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $900 (middle half $600 to $1,600, 63 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

Brake pads grip the discs to slow the car, while wear sensors alert you when attention is needed. Squealing, scraping, vibration or a warning message can point to worn parts. Delaying the repair can damage the discs and reduce braking performance.

We measure the pad lining and disc condition, inspect the wear sensors and confirm stored warnings with XENTRY. The measurements are documented, followed by an honest quote for only the worn parts before work starts.

When to inspect or replace: Pads and discs are measured at every service and replaced by thickness and condition against the limits for your car, not by mileage. Discs are judged on the same measurement, not on a fixed number of pad changes.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Brake early and gently, leave a gap so you roll instead of stopping at every light, and use engine braking on long descents; stop-and-go traffic wears pads and discs faster. Early signs: squeal, grinding, a pulse through the pedal, a wear warning on the dash.

Water pumps, thermostats, radiators and coolant leaks on the E-Class

19% of the E-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (64 of 341, 84 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $600 (middle half $300 to $1,300, 59 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

The cooling system moves heat away from the engine and keeps its operating temperature stable. A coolant warning, rising gauge, coloured puddle or sweet smell can signal a leak or circulation fault. Waiting can lead to overheating and far greater engine damage.

We pressure-test the cooling system, use dye where needed and compare temperature readings with XENTRY data. We record the leak source and quote honestly for the failed pump, thermostat, radiator, hose or seal before work starts.

When to inspect or replace: Water pumps, thermostats, radiators and hoses are inspected and pressure-tested and replaced when a fault is confirmed; some engines also list a scheduled water-pump replacement, which we check for your car. Coolant itself is changed on the maker's schedule for your engine.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Top up only with the specified coolant, and stop as soon as a temperature warning appears. Early signs: a sweet smell, a coolant level that keeps dropping, a wet patch, a temperature gauge climbing in traffic.

Gaskets, seals, covers and oil leaks on the E-Class

16% of the E-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (54 of 341, 67 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $500 (middle half $300 to $700, 48 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

Engine oil protects moving parts and helps carry heat away. Drips, a burning smell, smoke near the engine or falling oil level can point to a leaking gasket, seal, cover or housing. Ignoring the leak can contaminate nearby parts and leave the engine short of lubrication.

We clean the area, trace the leak from the highest wet point and use XENTRY to check related engine faults. Photos document the source, and the honest quote covers the leaking part before work starts.

When to inspect or replace: Checked at every service and repaired according to the source and severity found, from a weeping seal to a housing. No age makes a leak due.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Change the oil on time to the maker's specification, and fix small weeps before they reach belts, mountings and electrical parts. Early signs: drips under the car, a burning smell after driving, a falling oil level.

Battery replacement on the E-Class

13% of the E-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (45 of 341, 48 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $350 (middle half $350 to $400, 37 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

The battery supplies starting power and stabilises voltage for the car's electrical systems. Slow cranking, dim lights, warning messages or unavailable stop-start operation can signal a weak battery. Waiting can strain the charging system or leave the car unable to start.

We carry out a battery load test, test the charging system and review energy data with XENTRY. The results are documented so we can quote honestly for the battery or the actual charging fault before work starts.

When to inspect or replace: The starter battery is tested at every service and replaced on the test result rather than at a set age. Cars with a separate auxiliary battery for the stop-start system or the electronics have that battery tested and replaced the same way, and it is counted in this row. Hybrid drive batteries are a separate matter.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Short trips and daily aircon use are hard on a battery in Singapore; give the car a longer run where you can, switch accessories off before the engine, and park in shade. Early signs: slow cranking, lights dimming at idle, stop-start no longer working, a warning about the auxiliary battery, electrical warnings that come and go.

Sensors, switches and control modules on the E-Class

13% of the E-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (43 of 341, 51 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $450 (middle half $250 to $1,050, 33 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

Sensors, switches and control modules exchange information that keeps vehicle systems working correctly. Intermittent warnings, erratic operation or features that stop responding can point to a signal, power or communication fault. Guessing with replacement parts can raise the repair cost without solving the cause.

We scan the car with XENTRY, study live data and test the affected circuit, including its power, ground and connectors. We document the evidence and quote honestly for the sensor, switch, wiring or module that has actually failed before work starts.

When repair may be needed: Diagnosis-led: a fault code names a circuit, not a part, so we test the sensor, switch, wiring and module before anything is replaced.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Keep sunroof drains, door seals and boot seals clear so rain stays out of the cabin and boot, fix battery and charging faults early, and never jump-start with the polarity guessed. Early signs: warning lights that come and go, features that drop out in the rain, an unexplained battery drain.

Aircon compressor faults on the E-Class

10% of the E-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (34 of 341, 34 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $950 (middle half $900 to $1,000, 29 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

The aircon compressor circulates refrigerant so the cabin can cool and dehumidify. Warm air, unusual noise or cooling that cuts in and out can point to compressor trouble or another system fault. Continuing to run a failing compressor can spread debris and damage more of the aircon system.

We compare aircon pressures, perform a leak test and use XENTRY to check compressor commands and live data. The findings are documented before we give an honest quote for the compressor, control valve or leak that needs repair.

When repair may be needed: Replacement follows a confirmed compressor fault, not the car's age. Weak cooling on its own does not mean the compressor has failed, so any change in cooling, a new noise when the aircon engages or a compressor that no longer cuts in is assessed first.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Run the aircon regularly, keep the condenser and grille clean so the system is not working against high pressure, and have weak cooling investigated rather than topped up with gas again and again. Early signs: cooling that fades in traffic, a rattle or whine when the compressor engages, a clutch that cycles on and off.

This aircon repair is covered by a warranty of at least 6 months.

Absorbers, arms, bushes and links on the E-Class

9% of the E-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (30 of 341, 32 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $800 (middle half $550 to $1,400, 24 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

Suspension parts guide the wheels, control body movement and keep the tyres planted. Knocking, wandering, uneven tyre wear or a harsh and bouncy ride can signal worn components. Waiting can damage the tyres and weaken steering control.

We road test the car, inspect the suspension under load and check joints and bushes for movement, with XENTRY used for related chassis faults. We document the worn point and quote honestly for the failed absorber, arm, bush or link before work starts.

When to inspect or replace: Absorbers, arms, bushes and links are inspected on a lift and on a road test and replaced individually when worn, leaking or split. They do not share one lifespan.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Slow down for humps and rough roads, avoid mounting kerbs, and keep tyres at the right pressure. Early signs: knocks over bumps, a bouncy or floaty ride, uneven tyre wear, wandering steering.

Engine and gearbox mountings on the E-Class

9% of the E-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (29 of 341, 29 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $650 (middle half $500 to $750, 24 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

Mountings hold the powertrain in position while isolating vibration from the cabin. Shaking at idle, a thump during gear engagement or vibration through the seats can indicate a collapsed or torn mounting. Delaying replacement can place added strain on hoses, exhaust parts and driveline components.

We road test the vibration, inspect each mounting under controlled load and use XENTRY data to rule out rough engine or gearbox operation. The diagnosis is documented, then we quote honestly for the confirmed failed mounting before work starts.

When to inspect or replace: Mountings are inspected under load and replaced when a mount is confirmed split, collapsed or leaking. Vibration alone is not a diagnosis, because a misfire feels similar.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Accelerate and brake smoothly, especially between traffic lights, do not snap the car into gear at high revs, and fix oil leaks that soften the rubber. Early signs: a clunk when selecting drive, shake at idle, engine movement under load.

Alternator and starter motor faults on the E-Class

6% of the E-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (21 of 341, 22 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $700 (middle half $600 to $800, 17 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).

The alternator replenishes the battery while the engine runs, and the starter motor cranks the engine. A battery warning, slow cranking, clicking or repeated loss of charge can point to either unit or its wiring. Leaving the fault unresolved can damage the battery or prevent the engine from starting.

We test charging output and ripple, then perform voltage-drop and current-draw checks while reviewing starting and charging faults in XENTRY. We document whether the battery, cables, alternator or starter is responsible and give an honest quote before work starts.

When repair may be needed: A starting or charging complaint is diagnosed first, since a weak battery, a cable or a drain can look the same. The alternator or starter is replaced only when the test points to it.

Maintenance and early warning signs: Fix oil leaks that drip onto them, and replace a weak battery promptly so the alternator is not overworked. Early signs: a battery warning while driving, lights that dim with revs, a starter that clicks or grinds.

The final price moves with the failed part, access needed, parts choice and any related damage found during diagnosis. A recorded cost statistic is a guide, not a quote for your E-Class. We confirm the fault and give an honest price before work starts.

Singapore driving, and what it does to the E-Class

Local conditions play a big part in the wear we see. General guidance for cars driven in Singapore, not a statistic from our invoices.

Stop-and-go traffic. Singapore driving is mostly stop-and-go between traffic lights and in the expressway crawl. In our experience that is what wears brake pads and discs, gearbox fluid and engine mountings fastest, and it works a dual-clutch gearbox hard. Accelerate and brake gently, leave a gap so you roll instead of stopping, and use engine braking on slopes.

Heat and humidity. Under-bonnet temperatures stay high all year round, which is hard on batteries, rubber seals and hoses, and plastic cooling parts. Park in shade where you can, keep the coolant to specification, and have the battery tested at every service.

The aircon runs every day. When the engine is cut the cooling coil stays wet. Owners often tell us about a musty smell at start-up; in our experience that comes from the wet coil, and basement car parks make it worse because the air there is even more humid. Switching the compressor off shortly before you park and letting the fan run until the air is no longer cold helps the coil dry out. Change the cabin filter on schedule, and have the coil cleaned if the smell has set in.

Short trips. Short hops with the aircon on never bring the engine up to temperature for long and can leave the battery short of charge. Give the car a longer run where you can, and change the oil by time as well as mileage, with oil meeting the maker's specification and viscosity.

Malaysia trips and long jams. In a long Causeway or Tuas jam, keep a gap and move in steps rather than creeping on the brake. What to do depends on the gearbox fitted, not the badge, so check yours. With a torque-converter automatic (most BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo automatics, the Cayenne, and older Tiptronic Porsches) D with your foot on the brake is fine for a queue; N with the handbrake is for a longer standstill. With a dual-clutch gearbox (Porsche PDK as on the Macan, Panamera and the sports cars, Volkswagen DSG, Audi S tronic, the 7G-DCT in the smaller Mercedes-Benz models, and some MINI and BMW variants) creeping on a slipping clutch builds heat, so hold the brake fully, cover each gap in one go, and use N or P with the handbrake when stationary. Never select P while the car is still moving. Fill up before the trip and fix any coolant weep first; a hot jam is where a marginal cooling system fails.

Rain, blocked drains and floods. Sunroof drains, door seals and boot seals block with leaves and grime, and water then reaches connectors and control modules under the carpet; in our experience that is behind many of the electrical faults we see. Keep the drains clear, and never drive through a flooded road: an engine that takes in water needs a proper inspection and can mean major engine work.

Car parks, humps and kerbs. Multi-storey ramps, humps and tight lots punish suspension bushes, drop links and tyre sidewalls. Take humps slowly and straight, and avoid mounting kerbs.

How we keep these figures honest

Mercedes-Benz E-Class repair questions

How much is a servicing visit for the E-Class at 1 Car?

A servicing visit for the E-Class at 1 Car, mostly oil and filter services, typically cost about $250, middle half $250 to $300 (45 recent visits, whole invoice including GST). Visits that also carried repair work we classify, an aircon gas top-up or aircon-service line, a tyre or wheel-alignment line, or a generic parts or labour line are not counted. That is a statistic from our retail invoices, not a quote; the price for your car comes after we see it.

What repair work appears most often in your E-Class records?

Gearbox oil (ATF) change (24% of registrations), brake pads, discs or wear sensors (22% of registrations) and water pump, thermostat, radiator or coolant leak (19% of registrations), counted over 341 E-Class registrations in our records. An invoice line shows work done, not the reason for the visit; the table on this page gives the typical price of each item on the bill where we have enough recent priced bills.

Does this cover the E200 and E250?

Yes. The E-Class figures on this page pool every E-Class registration in our records, including the E200, E250, E300, W212 and W213.

Should I keep driving my E-Class with a coolant warning?

Stop safely and check the temperature display. Driving with low coolant or an overheating engine can cause major damage, so arrange an inspection rather than guessing from the warning alone.

Do you use dealer-level diagnostics for a Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Yes. We use XENTRY to read faults, view live data and run guided checks, then confirm the result with the relevant physical test or measurement.

Can you diagnose a warning light without replacing the control module?

Yes. A module fault message can also come from wiring, weak voltage, poor grounding or a failed sensor. We test the circuit and communication path before recommending a part.

Why does my E-Class vibrate at idle or during gear engagement?

A worn mounting is possible, but rough engine operation or a driveline fault can feel similar. We combine a road test, mounting inspection and XENTRY data to separate the causes.

Can I bring an existing repair quote for review?

Yes. Send it through WhatsApp or bring it with the car. We inspect the reported fault and explain what needs attention before giving our own honest quote.
