It depends on the car and the part: a continental alternator with a clutch pulley and a smart-charging module costs more than a plain Japanese unit, and a quality reconditioned alternator sits well below a new original where your model allows it. My car has a pop-up message mention "Low Battery Charge", went to several workshop and all told me that it was the alternator has issue and need to change. Jin is the ONLY one who can firmly tell me that it is not and pointed out that it was the battery issue. He also took the effort to remove the bumper and took a video to show me that the battery was faulty and he also highlighted to me that the battery that i have was not compatible to my car. He is very honest with what he saw and diagnose the car condition with equipment and his experiences.
My car has had loud squeaking noises for nearly two years, especially loud when making turns in reverse. Went to other workshops to have it fixed but the issue persisted. Glad to have found 1 Car Service from an online search recently. Jin managed to resolve the issue by replacing the fairly new but cracked fan belt and the alternator that has a misaligned pulley. The whole experience working with Jin has been very positive. He is prompt and clear in his reply. His technicians are highly competent. Prices are reasonable and clearly itemised.

The three get blamed for each other all the time. The alternator charges the battery and powers the car while the engine runs; the battery stores that charge; the starter uses it to crank the engine. A weak battery makes the starter click and the lights dim, which looks like an alternator fault. A failing alternator slowly drains a good battery, which looks like a battery fault. And a corroded cable or earth strap can mimic either.
So we test, not guess. We check the battery's health and state of charge, measure the alternator's output and ripple with the engine running and under load, look at the belt and tensioner, and measure the starter's current draw when it cranks. The numbers tell us which part has failed, and we show them to you. Heat and stop-start traffic are hard on an alternator. Its bearings, brushes and voltage regulator wear with mileage, the clutch pulley fitted to many continental cars can seize or free-wheel, and a cracked belt or a weak tensioner lets it slip so it never charges properly. Some fail quietly with a warning light; others announce themselves with a whine that rises with the revs.
Ignoring it does not end well. The battery does the work until it is flat, then the engine stalls, often at the worst moment, and a deep-drained battery is often damaged for good. Modern cars are also unforgiving of low voltage: expect random warning lights, a stuttering gearbox and electronics that misbehave before the car finally stops. If the light is on, get it tested now and drive less until it is.
A starter motor fails in three ways, and each has a sound. A single click with no crank usually means the solenoid engages but the motor does not turn. Rapid clicking usually means not enough current, which is often the battery or a bad connection rather than the starter. A grinding or whirring on start-up points to a worn starter drive or ring gear. Slow cranking when the engine is hot is a classic sign of a tired starter on older cars.
We test the starter draw and the voltage drop across the cables before touching anything, because a corroded terminal is a far cheaper fix than a starter. If the starter is the fault, we replace it with a quality unit and confirm a clean, quick crank before you collect the car.

Many Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Porsche models use smart charging, where the engine computer controls the alternator's output. On many of these cars a new battery has to be registered, and some need the replacement alternator coded or adapted before the system charges the way it should. Fit the wrong unit, or skip a coding step the car needs, and the charging is never right.
