What the owner noticed

The owner got home and plugged in the E350e as usual. Nothing happened. The charging indicator did not light up and the battery showed no sign of charging after an hour. On the dashboard, a fault message pointed to the charging system.

The E350e plug-in system and how it works

The Mercedes-Benz E350e W213 pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor fed by a high-voltage battery pack. The battery sits under the boot floor. The on-board charger (OBC) converts incoming AC power from the wall socket into DC to charge the high-voltage battery. It is essentially the bridge between your home charger and the car's battery pack.

When the OBC fails, AC charging stops entirely. The car still runs on petrol because the combustion engine is independent of the charger, but the battery cannot be topped up from the wall. The hybrid drive system may also show reduced functionality depending on the state of charge.

How we diagnosed the fault

We connected our XENTRY dealer-level diagnostic system to the E350e and ran a full high-voltage system scan. The fault codes pointed clearly to the on-board charger control unit: a component failure, not a wiring or connector issue.

The OBC is accessed through the boot floor. We removed the boot liner, located the unit, and confirmed the diagnosis against the fault codes: the control board inside the charger had failed. It was not a relay, not a fuse, and not a simple connector problem. The unit itself needed replacing.

Why on-board chargers fail on PHEVs

The OBC in a PHEV runs current through it every time the car charges. In a Singapore household where the owner plugs in nightly, that is 365 cycles a year. Heat, humidity, and repeated thermal cycling stress the internal components over time. Component degradation on the control board is the most common failure mode.

This is not unique to Mercedes. Any PHEV with regular home charging will eventually have OBC wear. The E350e's OBC is housed in a protected location under the boot floor which shields it from road debris but does not prevent internal component fatigue over years of use.

What we did

We replaced the failed on-board charger control unit through the boot floor access.

  • Removed the boot floor liner and trim to access the HV system.
  • Isolated the high-voltage system before handling any HV components.
  • Disconnected the AC input connectors and HV DC output cables.
  • Removed the failed OBC control unit.
  • Fitted the replacement OBC control unit.
  • Reconnected the HV cables and AC input connectors; checked all connections were secure.
  • Cleared fault codes with XENTRY and ran a charging system function test.
  • Confirmed the car accepted a charge from the AC wall box.
