Mercedes GLC: Front Lower Arms, Full Brake Overhaul and Active Bonnet Error Fixed in One Visit

This Mercedes GLC came in with three separate issues: worn front lower arm bushings causing a knocking ride, brakes that were due for a full overhaul front and rear, and a persistent active bonnet malfunction warning on the dashboard. We diagnosed all three in one inspection and completed everything in a single workshop visit.

What the owner reported

The owner noticed the Mercedes GLC had started to feel unsettled over bumps, with a knocking sensation through the front end. The brakes had also been feeling less responsive. On top of that, a dashboard warning for the active bonnet system had come on and would not clear.

Rather than visiting three different places to deal with each issue separately, he wanted everything looked at together.

About the Mercedes GLC and these systems

The Mercedes GLC uses an independent front suspension setup with lower control arms. These arms carry rubber or hydraulic bushings that absorb road impact and maintain wheel geometry. When the bushings wear out, the arm develops play and the familiar knock through the wheel and cabin starts. Left long enough, worn lower arms affect tyre wear and handling precision.

The GLC's braking system runs discs, pads and electronic wear sensors at all four corners. When the sensors report end-of-life, a warning appears on the dash and the pads themselves are often already close to the metal. Doing a full brake overhaul at once avoids a second workshop visit a few weeks later.

The active bonnet system on some GLC variants is a pedestrian safety feature with sensors and actuators that raise the bonnet in certain collision scenarios. When a sensor or actuator develops a fault it triggers a dashboard warning that cannot be dismissed without replacing the faulty component and clearing the code with a compatible diagnostic system.

What we found

We put the car up on the ramp and inspected the front suspension. Both front lower arm bushings showed clear wear, with visible movement when the arm was loaded by hand. The brake pads were at minimum thickness front and rear, and the discs had worn beyond their service limit on both axles. The wear sensors had already triggered on the front.

We connected Mercedes Xentry, the same dealer-level diagnostic system used by Mercedes authorised centres, and pulled a stored fault code for the active bonnet actuator on the driver's side. The actuator had failed internally and was holding the fault code that prevented the warning from clearing.

What was causing each issue

Three independent faults, each from age and use:

Front lower arm bushings wear gradually with mileage, particularly in Singapore's stop-start traffic conditions where the suspension loads and unloads constantly. At the wear point, the rubber inside the bushing breaks down and allows the arm to move when it should stay fixed, giving that knocking sensation over bumps and road imperfections.

Brakes wear at a predictable rate determined by driving style and the weight of the vehicle. The GLC is a heavier SUV, so pads and discs work harder per stop than on a lighter car. All four corners were due at the same time because they had been worn down at roughly the same pace.

The active bonnet actuator is an electromechanical component that sits dormant for most of the car's life. When the internal mechanism or the sensor that monitors its status fails, the system raises a fault code and keeps the dashboard warning lit until the component is replaced and the code cleared.

What we replaced

Front lower arms: both front lower control arms were removed and replaced with quality equivalent units. After fitting, we put the car through a full four-wheel alignment to bring the geometry back to Mercedes specification.

Brake overhaul: brake pads, discs and wear sensors were replaced on all four corners in one session. New parts were bedded in before the car was returned.

Active bonnet: the faulty active bonnet actuator was replaced and the fault code cleared using Xentry. The warning cleared immediately and did not return.

Engine oil top-up was included at no charge to complete the service. The car was test-driven after all repairs before handover.

Before and after

Before

  • Knocking from the front suspension over bumps and road imperfections
  • Brake pads at minimum thickness front and rear, discs worn beyond limit
  • Active bonnet malfunction warning lit on the dashboard
  • Wheel alignment affected by worn lower arm geometry

After

  • No knocking. Front suspension settled and quiet after new lower arms fitted
  • Full brake overhaul completed on all four corners, new pads, discs and sensors
  • Active bonnet warning cleared, fault code gone after actuator replacement
  • Four-wheel alignment completed to Mercedes specification

What this Mercedes GLC repair costs in Singapore

The cost of a repair like this depends on what the inspection finds. Front lower arm replacement on a Mercedes GLC, a full four-corner brake overhaul, and active bonnet actuator work are each priced separately and quoted clearly before any work starts.

We do not bundle repairs to inflate the invoice, and we do not start work until you have agreed to the quote. WhatsApp us your model and what you are experiencing and we will let you know what to expect.

Keeping your Mercedes GLC in good shape

Front suspension bushings and brake components both give advance warning before they reach the point of failure. On the suspension side, a knocking or clunking from the front end when you go over bumps is an early sign worth checking. On brakes, the wear sensor warning on the dashboard is the car telling you the pads are at the limit.

Getting an inspection when the first signs appear is always cheaper than waiting for the component to fail completely. Both brake wear and lower arm wear are predictable, and fixing them at the right time avoids secondary damage.

Mercedes GLC repairs: common questions

How much does a Mercedes GLC front lower arm replacement cost in Singapore?

The cost depends on what is found on inspection and whether one or both lower arms need replacing. We give you a clear quote before work starts. WhatsApp us your model and mileage and we will let you know what to expect.

Do I need to do both front lower arms at the same time on a Mercedes GLC?

If both sides show similar wear, replacing both at the same visit makes sense. Worn bushings wear at similar rates because they experience the same loads over the same mileage. Doing one side now and the other a few months later usually costs more overall and means a second alignment job. We inspect both and advise you honestly on what is actually worn.

How much does a full Mercedes GLC brake overhaul cost in Singapore?

A full four-corner brake overhaul covering pads, discs and wear sensors on all four corners varies depending on the model and the parts needed. We quote before work begins. If only the fronts or rears are due, we will tell you that too and not push you to replace what does not need doing.

Can you fix a Mercedes active bonnet malfunction warning in Singapore?

Yes. We use Mercedes Xentry, the same dealer-level diagnostic system used by authorised centres, to pull the specific fault code and identify which component has failed. After replacing the faulty actuator or sensor, we clear the code with Xentry. The warning clears and the system is back to normal.

Is it safe to keep driving with a knocking front suspension?

A knock from the front suspension is usually a lower arm bushing or a worn ball joint. These affect how the wheel stays aligned under load, which affects braking and stability in an emergency. It is worth getting it checked soon rather than leaving it, because the longer worn bushings run, the more uneven the tyre wear becomes, and the more the geometry drifts from where it should be.
