This Superb has a DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox), the Volkswagen Group's dual-clutch automatic transmission. Inside the DSG are two separate clutches, one for odd gears and one for even gears, along with the internal gear shafts, bearings and solenoids.
The mechatronic unit is the electronic and hydraulic control brain of the DSG. It reads the gear position, throttle input and clutch slip, and tells the gearbox when and how to change gear.
