This is where a lot of owners get a nasty surprise. The car drops on one corner, an air suspension warning comes up, and the quote comes back to replace the entire system: all four struts, the compressor, the lot. Thousands of dollars later the problem is gone, but in plenty of cases most of that system was still perfectly good.

Air suspension is made of separate parts. There are the air struts or air springs at each corner, an air compressor that pumps them up, a valve block that directs the air, height sensors, and a control module tying it together. When it fails, it is usually one of those parts, not all of them. A single air strut has perished and is leaking. The compressor has burned out because it was overworking to keep up with a slow leak. The valve block is weeping. Sort out the part that actually failed and the system works the way it should again, at a fraction of the cost of replacing everything.

Air suspension symptoms are fairly specific once you know what to look for.

1. The car sits low or lopsided when parked. The most common first sign. A corner or a whole end settles overnight as air leaks out, then rises again after you start up. As the leak worsens, it stops recovering.

2. A warning on the dash. Air suspension malfunction, raise vehicle, or a similar message. On many cars the system drops into a safe mode and will not adjust height until the fault is fixed.

3. A harsh, crashy ride. With air missing from a corner, you feel every bump and joint in the road. It can feel like the suspension has gone solid.

4. The compressor runs and runs. A compressor working overtime, or a whine that carries on long after you have started the car, points to a leak it is fighting to keep up with. That constant running is what kills the compressor next.

5. The car is slow to rise, or will not lift. Start up and the car takes a long time to come up to height, or stays down. That can be the compressor, the valve block or a bad leak.

6. Leaning or squatting under load. The car leans to one side, or the rear squats with passengers or a boot full and does not level back up.

Porsche. The Cayenne, Panamera and Macan use air suspension, and the air struts and compressor are common failure points as the cars age in our climate. A corner that sits low overnight is the classic Cayenne and Panamera sign.

Range Rover and Land Rover. Range Rover, Sport and Vogue air springs and the compressor are well-known to sag and fail with age and heat. A common job, and one owners are often quoted the earth for.
