Engine Overhaul and Gearbox Overhaul Services
Engine Overhaul
Engine overhaul involves a complete disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly of your car’s engine. This process addresses issues such as excessive wear, poor performance, and inefficiency, restoring your engine to optimal condition.
Engine Overhaul vs. Engine Top Overhaul:
- Engine Overhaul: Comprehensive disassembly and rebuilding of the entire engine.
- Engine Top Overhaul: Focuses on the upper components of the engine, such as the cylinder head and valve train.
Gearbox Overhaul
A gearbox overhaul entails dismantling the gearbox, inspecting each component, replacing worn parts, and reassembling it to ensure smooth and efficient gear shifts. This service is crucial for maintaining your vehicle’s performance and longevity.
Understanding Your Vehicle’s Core Components
Difference Between Engine and Gearbox
- Engine: The powerhouse of your vehicle, responsible for converting fuel into mechanical energy to propel the car.
- Gearbox: The transmission system that adjusts the engine’s power to control the vehicle’s speed and torque.
How Does a Car Engine Work?
A car engine operates by igniting fuel within cylinders, creating controlled explosions that generate mechanical energy. This energy drives the pistons, which in turn rotate the crankshaft, ultimately powering the vehicle.
How Does a Gearbox Work?
The gearbox manages the engine’s power output by selecting the appropriate gear ratio, enabling the car to accelerate, maintain speed, and operate efficiently at various speeds.
Transmission System Components
A car’s transmission system is a complex network of components that work together to ensure power from the engine reaches the wheels efficiently. Each element has a crucial role in the vehicle’s overall performance and drivability. Here’s a breakdown of the key components in a transmission system:
Gearbox: The gearbox is responsible for adjusting the engine’s power to the wheels by selecting different gear ratios. It helps manage speed, torque, and fuel efficiency by shifting gears as needed. It can come in manual, automatic, or semi-automatic forms, each offering a different driving experience.
Transmission Control Module (TCM): The TCM is an electronic brain that manages and controls the automatic shifting of gears. It monitors various signals from the engine, such as speed, load, and throttle position, and uses this data to determine the optimal timing for gear changes. The TCM ensures smooth transitions between gears and maximises fuel efficiency.
Valve Body: The valve body is a critical component in an automatic transmission system. It is a maze of channels and passages that directs hydraulic fluid to different clutches and bands, enabling the TCM to engage the correct gear. The valve body acts as the communication centre of the transmission, coordinating the flow of transmission fluid to execute gear changes smoothly.
Torque Converter: The torque converter replaces the clutch in an automatic transmission. It allows the engine to keep running while the car is stopped, by using a fluid coupling mechanism to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. This enables smoother acceleration and prevents stalling during idle, providing a seamless driving experience.
Drive Shafts: Drive shafts are rotating tubes that transfer power from the gearbox to the differential. They ensure that the engine’s torque reaches the wheels, enabling the car to move. Drive shafts are essential for maintaining the balance and alignment of the vehicle’s powertrain.
Differential: The differential is a device that distributes power from the transmission to the wheels, allowing them to rotate at different speeds, especially during cornering. It ensures that the wheel on the outside of a turn can rotate faster than the wheel on the inside, providing stability and control during turns. Different types of differentials (open, limited-slip, and locking) cater to varying driving conditions and vehicle types.
Types of Gearbox Designs
A vehicle’s gearbox design significantly influences its driving dynamics, fuel efficiency, and overall performance. Below is a detailed look at various gearbox types and their unique characteristics:
Automatic Transmission (AT): An automatic transmission shifts gears on its own based on the vehicle’s speed and engine load. It uses a combination of hydraulic pressure, sensors, and the TCM to change gears, offering a smooth and effortless driving experience. Ideal for city driving, AT gearboxes allow drivers to focus more on the road rather than shifting gears.
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT): A CVT uses a system of belts and pulleys instead of fixed gears, offering a seamless range of gear ratios. This allows the engine to operate at its most efficient RPM, leading to better fuel economy. CVTs are known for providing a smooth, jerk-free acceleration, but some drivers may find the absence of gear changes less engaging.
Automated Manual Transmission (AMT): An AMT is essentially a manual transmission with an automated clutch system. It allows for automatic gear shifts without the need for a clutch pedal, combining the simplicity of a manual gearbox with the convenience of an automatic. While AMTs are generally more affordable and easier to maintain than full automatics, their gear changes can sometimes feel less smooth.
Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT): A DCT uses two separate clutches for odd and even gears, allowing for quicker and more seamless gear shifts. The dual-clutch design ensures that the next gear is pre-selected, resulting in a more responsive and sportier driving experience. DCTs are often found in high-performance vehicles due to their rapid shifting capabilities, though they can be more complex and costly to repair.
Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK): PDK is Porsche’s version of a dual-clutch transmission. It offers lightning-fast gear changes, combining the performance of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic. PDK systems are known for their precision, making them a favourite among driving enthusiasts who want a high level of control without sacrificing comfort.
Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG): Similar to DCT, the DSG uses two clutches to pre-select gears, ensuring almost instantaneous gear shifts. DSG transmissions provide a perfect balance between smoothness and performance, making them popular in many Volkswagen and Audi models. However, they require regular maintenance, such as oil changes, to ensure longevity.
Tiptronic Transmission: Tiptronic is a type of automatic transmission that allows the driver to manually select gears if desired, providing a more engaging driving experience. This gearbox design offers the convenience of an automatic with the option of manual control, making it suitable for drivers who want the best of both worlds.
Manual Transmission: The classic manual transmission requires the driver to manually engage and disengage the clutch while shifting gears using a gear lever. This gearbox provides a high level of control, allowing drivers to optimise their car’s performance in different driving conditions. While it demands more effort and skill, many enthusiasts appreciate the tactile feedback and connection it offers with the vehicle.
Each of these gearbox designs has its strengths, catering to different driving styles and preferences. Whether you prioritise fuel efficiency, sporty performance, or a hands-off driving experience, understanding these options helps you choose the right gearbox for your needs.

Testimonials
This is the first time I serviced my car at an external workshop. Had an issue with my transmission. DX had his mechanic check the issue on the spot and was able to advise in detail the issue, repair needed and cost. He communicated with great clarity what they were going to fix alongside their charges. DX is very genuine and definitely knows his stuff. I subsequently also had my aircon fixed. Both jobs were done well. Overall reasonable pricing with excellent customer service. Highly recommended.

Amazing experience at 1 Car! Started doing servicing with them last year, DX and his team are professional, transparent, fast and reliable. Everything was seamless and smooth, great responsiveness, superb customer service, good amenities, excellent competency in all aspect.
Really nothing but thumbs up for the great service, passion and professionalism from the team. Will definitely recommend to all friends and family to this reliable and trustworthy workshop.

Great service provided. DX is very friendly and eloquent, and patiently explained the various options for my car. I will definitely come again next time to do my regular maintenance service.
I stayed at the lounge during the service. There are coffee, tea, and drink provided there along with biscuit and candies. There is air purifier for the room as well. Free wifi inside – I didn’t use the wifi though. There is a charger on the desk as well in case the phone need to be recharged.
