It depends on the car: the condenser sits at the front of the car and is quick to reach on most models, so the part is the biggest piece of the bill, and a continental car with the newer refrigerant costs more to recharge than an older Japanese model. The condenser is the radiator-like panel in front of your engine radiator. The compressor sends hot, high-pressure refrigerant gas into it, air flowing through the grille cools that gas into a liquid, and the liquid goes on to the cooling coil in the dashboard to make your cold air. No condenser, no cold.
It lives in the worst spot on the car. Every stone the car in front throws up, every kerb tap, every downpour and every bit of road salt hits the condenser first. The fins bend and block, the aluminium corrodes, and the thin tubes and joints start to weep refrigerant. In Singapore's heat the aircon runs all day, so a weak condenser shows up fast: cold on the expressway where air is forced through it, weak in a jam where it depends on the fan alone. We put the system on the gauges, pressure test it and run UV dye through it. A condenser leak usually shows itself at the front of the car: dye on the fins, an oily patch where dirt sticks, a bent pipe at a joint. We also check the condenser fan, because a fan that has stopped makes a healthy condenser look like a bad one, and that is a much cheaper fix.
Sometimes the answer is elsewhere. A leaking hose, a worn seal or a compressor on its way out can each empty the system, and a leak inside the dashboard is the cooling coil, a bigger job. We tell you straight which one your car needs, with an itemised quote before any work starts. On continental cars we read the climate module with dealer-level diagnostics, XENTRY for Mercedes-Benz, ISTA for BMW, ODIS for Audi and Volkswagen and PIWIS for Porsche, so a sensor or fan fault is not mistaken for a leak.
The condenser sits behind the bumper and grille, so on most cars the bumper comes off, the old condenser and its receiver drier come out, and the new unit goes in with new seals at every joint. We replace the drier every time: it is the filter and moisture trap of the system, most new condensers carry it built in, and a drier that has been open to air will corrode the new parts from inside.
If the old compressor failed and shed metal into the circuit, the lines are flushed before the new condenser is connected, otherwise that debris blocks the new condenser within weeks. The system is then vacuumed to pull out moisture, recharged with the correct refrigerant to the exact weight for your car, leak tested again, and the cabin temperature checked before handover. Rarely. The tubes are thin aluminium and a weld on a corroded panel seldom holds under pressure. Bent fins can be straightened if the tubes are intact, and we tell you honestly when that is enough.
The drier filters the refrigerant and traps moisture. Once the system has been open it is saturated, and moisture inside an aircon system turns acidic and corrodes the new parts. On most cars the drier is built into the condenser, so it comes as part of the job.
Often, but not always. A compressor that seized usually sends metal debris into the condenser, where it lodges in the narrow tubes and cannot be flushed out fully. We inspect what came through and tell you whether the condenser can be saved.
