The mechatronic unit sits inside the gearbox in a harsh environment of heat, hydraulic fluid and mechanical vibration. Over time, the solenoid valves can wear or clog with debris, the control electronics can develop faults from heat cycling, and the seals in the hydraulic circuits can degrade.
In Singapore's stop-start urban traffic, the automated gearbox is engaged continuously for much of the drive. This puts consistent demand on the mechatronic unit and accelerates wear compared to a vehicle driven primarily at highway speeds.
A mechatronic unit fault caught at the erratic-shifting stage is a component-level repair. Left until the gearbox fails completely, the repair becomes much more extensive.
