The owner noticed the Audi S5 was going through engine oil far faster than it should. About a litre per thousand kilometres was disappearing, which meant frequent top-ups and growing concern about what was happening inside the engine.

The Audi S5 is a performance car that puts significant demands on its engine. A tuned engine produces more heat and pressure than a standard unit, which accelerates the wear of seals, gaskets and internal components.
High oil consumption in a modern petrol engine is always a sign of something wrong, either the oil is burning off past the piston rings or it is leaking past degraded seals. On this S5, both were happening at the same time.
The owner left the car with us for a check first. After that first look, the owner went ahead with the full engine overhaul, and we went through the engine and the underside of the car.
We found several problems behind the oil loss.
Inside the engine, the piston rings were clogged. That was the reason the engine was burning oil.
The oil separator was not an original part. It was one of several oil leak points, along with the engine oil sump and oil level sensor, the valve cover and oil cap, and the oil pressure switch and control valve. The fuel injector O-rings had aged and hardened. The engine oil cooler had been patched with sealant at some point before. The automatic transmission was leaking oil too.
The timing covers deform once removed, so they had to be replaced.
The main reason was inside the engine. The piston rings were clogged, and that made the engine burn oil. We found it when we opened the engine up for the overhaul.
The leaks added to the loss. Many seals, hoses and connectors had aged, and some earlier fixes had been done with sealant or non-original parts, like the oil cooler and the oil separator.
The owner had been told the car had a Stage 1 tune from a previous owner, and we found a modified pulley and a modified small radiator during the job. In our team's experience, non-original parts start leaking quickly, more so on a tuned engine.
