Audi S5 Engine Overhaul: 1 Litre Per 1,000km Oil Burn Sorted, 3-Year / 60,000km Warranty

This Audi S5 was burning through engine oil at a litre per thousand kilometres and leaking from several points. We found the root causes and did a full engine overhaul. The car left with a 3-year, 60,000km warranty.

What the owner reported

The owner noticed the Audi S5 was going through engine oil far faster than it should. About a litre per thousand kilometres was disappearing, which meant frequent top-ups and growing concern about what was happening inside the engine.

There was also an oil stain building up under the car. The owner asked us to lift the car, find where the oil was going, and give an honest recommendation.

The car

The Audi S5 is a performance coupe that puts significant demands on its engine. A tuned engine produces more heat and pressure than a standard unit, which accelerates the wear of seals, gaskets and internal components.

High oil consumption in a modern petrol engine is always a sign of something wrong, either the oil is burning off past worn piston rings or it is leaking past degraded seals. On this S5, both were happening at the same time.

How we diagnosed it

We used ODIS diagnostic tools to scan the car and check for fault codes, then lifted the car and inspected the engine and undercarriage carefully.

We found several problems contributing to the oil loss.

The oil separator was not an original Audi unit. A previous workshop had fitted an aftermarket replacement that was not sealing correctly, allowing oil mist to circulate back into the intake and burn off.

The engine oil sump was leaking from deteriorated seals and an oil level sensor that had failed. The valve cover was also leaking. The timing cover was visibly deformed from what appeared to be a previous impact, and it was leaking from the seal around it. The engine oil cooler gasket had also failed.

The internal engine condition was worn from the sustained oil burning. A full overhaul was necessary to restore the engine properly.

Why these faults tend to appear together

An aftermarket oil separator that does not seal correctly starts a chain reaction. Oil mist that should be captured and returned to the sump instead gets drawn into the intake and burned. This shows up as high oil consumption long before any visible external leak appears.

At the same time, a tuned engine runs at higher temperatures and pressures than stock. Those conditions accelerate the ageing of every seal and gasket in the engine. Once one seal fails, the others are usually not far behind.

The deformed timing cover added another leak point that no amount of normal servicing would have caught, because it required lifting the car and inspecting the cover directly.

What we did

We carried out a full engine overhaul and addressed every oil leak point found during diagnosis.

  • Full engine overhaul: engine removed, stripped and rebuilt with new internals and fresh seals throughout.
  • Replaced the aftermarket oil separator with a genuine Audi unit.
  • Replaced the engine oil sump and oil level sensors.
  • Replaced the valve cover and all associated gaskets.
  • Repaired the oil cooler gasket.
  • Addressed the timing cover.
  • Carried out an automatic transmission filter and fluid service.
  • Wheel alignment after all suspension and drivetrain work.
  • Road tested and rescanned with ODIS to confirm no remaining fault codes.

Before and after

Before

  • Burning approximately 1 litre of oil per 1,000km
  • Oil leaking from sump, valve cover, timing cover, oil cooler
  • Aftermarket oil separator causing oil mist to burn through intake
  • Transmission fluid and filter overdue

After

  • Engine rebuilt and oil consumption resolved
  • All external leaks sealed
  • Genuine oil separator fitted, intake route clean
  • Transmission serviced with fresh fluid and new filter

What an Audi S5 engine overhaul costs in Singapore

The engine overhaul for this S5 was $7,800 before GST. That covers the full rebuild of the engine internals. Additional parts to address the oil leaks, the oil separator, sump, valve cover, oil cooler and transmission service were quoted and approved separately.

Engine overhaul pricing varies depending on the extent of wear found when the engine is stripped. We quote after the strip-down, so you know exactly what you are paying for. We carry a 3-year / 60,000km warranty on all engine overhauls.

How to catch engine problems early on an Audi S5

Oil consumption that is noticeably higher than normal is the first warning sign. If you find yourself adding oil between services, get it checked before the next service is due.

Any oil stain under the car where you park is worth investigating promptly. A small seal leak is a minor repair. Left untreated, the same leak can grow and lead to oil starvation.

For a tuned car, keeping up with oil changes using the correct grade is especially important. The higher operating temperatures of a tuned engine degrade oil faster.

Audi S5 engine overhaul: common questions

How much does an Audi S5 engine overhaul cost in Singapore?

The overhaul on this S5 was $7,800 before GST for the full engine rebuild. Additional parts to fix all the oil leaks were quoted separately. Every job is different depending on what we find inside, so we quote after the strip-down.

What warranty do I get on an Audi engine overhaul?

Our full engine overhaul carries a 3-year / 60,000km warranty. That is what this Audi S5 left with.

My Audi is burning oil. Is it always the engine that needs an overhaul?

Not necessarily. Sometimes high oil consumption comes from a faulty oil separator that can be fixed without a full overhaul. We diagnose first and recommend only what is actually needed. On this S5, the extent of internal wear meant a full overhaul was the right answer.

Do you use Audi diagnostic tools?

Yes. We use ODIS VAG diagnostic tools, which is the same system Audi dealers use, to scan the car before and after any engine work.

Can you work on a tuned Audi S5?

Yes. We have worked on Audi vehicles that have been tuned. We focus on getting the mechanical fundamentals right. We recommend discussing any tune with us during the diagnosis so we can advise on parts compatibility.
