The Hyundai Elantra AD is a well-regarded compact saloon with a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. It is a practical, reliable car when properly maintained, and one of the more common Hyundais on Singapore roads.
Like all cars, the Elantra has engine and gearbox mounts that are rubber-bonded components. These mounts hold the engine and gearbox in place and absorb the constant vibration of the drivetrain so that the driver and passengers do not feel it directly. Over time and with heat cycles, the rubber hardens and degrades. When the mounts lose their damping ability, the vibration is transmitted directly into the car body.

The battery tested weak, so we advised replacing it. All the brakes were in good condition. The tyres were badly and unevenly worn, so we advised new tyres and then a wheel alignment.
We also found the engine mounting had sunk. The owner asked how many mountings were involved and for a picture. We quoted an engine and gearbox mounting set, which comes as three pieces, and sent the owner a video and photos.

Engine and gearbox mounts are rubber components that work constantly. Every time the engine fires, every acceleration, every gear change, puts load through the mounts. Singapore's heat accelerates the breakdown of the rubber compound: the material hardens, loses its flexibility, and can develop cracks over time.
When the mounts can no longer absorb the engine's movement properly, the vibration travels directly into the car body instead of being damped. It tends to be worst at idle when the engine is rocking on its mounts, and under light load when the engine is running at low revs.
