What the owner reported

The owner messaged us that the car was turning off by itself. He suspected a loose cable and asked us to look when he dropped it in.

After we found the harness problem, he took the car back while he thought it over. A few weeks later the stalling was happening too often, and he asked us to order the part.

The car

An engine wiring harness is the main bundle of electrical cables that connects the engine control unit to the sensors, actuators and other components in the engine bay. It carries signals for fuel injectors, ignition timing, the throttle, oxygen sensors, and more. If the harness develops breaks or shorts, the engine can receive incorrect or missing signals and cut out.

What the inspection found

Our team found the problem in the engine bay. The wiring harness on the engine had cracked and melted in places, and the wires were stuck together. A harness in that state could be behind the car cutting out, so we advised fixing it first.

There was no alternative fix for a harness this badly damaged. The right answer was a new one.

This harness is not easy to get. It had to be ordered, and the supplier quoted around 10 days. The tracking showed it being shipped in to Singapore.

Why engine wiring harnesses fail

Engine bays get very hot, and Singapore's heat and humidity do not help. Over the years, the plastic insulation on wiring can harden, crack, or soften and melt onto the wires next to it.

Once the insulation goes, wires can touch each other or lose contact on and off. The engine can then lose signals it needs, and the car can cut out without warning.

What we did

Once the owner gave the go-ahead, we ordered a new engine wiring harness. It reached us about 10 days later, and we asked for 2 days with the car to fit it.

After the new harness was fitted, our team drove the car around. It did not cut out, and we asked the owner to drive it for a while and let us know. It was ready for pickup on 31 Oct.

How to monitor an aging wiring harness

A wiring harness rarely gives clear warning signs until it has already degraded. Cutting out at random, or electrical faults that come and go, are often the first hints.

If your Volvo keeps switching off by itself, do not assume it is just a loose connection. Have the engine bay wiring properly inspected so the real cause is found.
