What brought the Volvo V40 in

The owner noticed a burning smell from the engine bay and the aircon had stopped cooling. At first, the smell came only when the aircon was switched on. Then it started appearing even with the aircon off. By the time the car reached us, the accessory belt was visibly stressed.

A seized AC compressor is not a subtle fault. When the compressor seizes, the belt that drives it is forced to slip over a locked pulley. Rubber burns against metal, the belt frays, and eventually it snaps. If the belt also drives the alternator or power steering pump, you can lose those too without warning.

How the Volvo V40 AC compressor works

The V40's air conditioning system uses an engine-driven compressor. A serpentine belt from the crankshaft drives the compressor pulley. Inside the compressor, a clutch engages and disengages the compression mechanism depending on whether the AC is switched on.

When a compressor seizes internally, the rotating internals stop moving but the pulley keeps being driven by the belt. The result is belt slip, heat, smoke, and eventually belt failure. The condenser, which sits in front of the radiator and dissipates heat from the refrigerant, had also deteriorated and needed replacing at the same time. Replacing the compressor without checking the condenser leaves old debris circulating and can damage the new compressor.

What we found on inspection

We checked the accessory belt, the compressor clutch, and the belt routing. The compressor was seized: the clutch had failed internally and the compressor was locked. The belt showed heat damage consistent with weeks of running against a seized pulley.

We also checked refrigerant pressure. When a compressor seizes, metal debris can circulate into the condenser and refrigerant lines. The condenser had debris contamination and a pinhole leak, so it needed replacing along with the compressor. Fitting a new compressor without flushing the system and replacing a debris-contaminated condenser is the fastest way to kill the new compressor within months.

Why AC compressors seize

AC compressor seizure in Singapore typically happens for one of three reasons: lubrication failure, refrigerant loss, or simply age and heat cycles.

The compressor is lubricated by oil that circulates with the refrigerant. When refrigerant leaks out slowly, the oil level drops with it.
