Volvo V40 Slipping and Running Rough: How We Overhauled the Gearbox, Replaced the Injectors and Engine Mount

This Volvo V40 came in slipping on the gears and running rough. Here is how we found all three faults and fixed them properly.

What the owner reported

The owner brought in a Volvo V40 that was not shifting right. The gearbox was slipping, and the engine ran rough with a strong vibration coming through the car. Two problems at once, and neither was getting better.

A gearbox that slips is not something to keep driving on. The longer it runs like that, the more the inside wears. The ask was simple. Find out what was wrong, and fix it so the car drives smooth again. The owner wanted a clear answer and a firm price before any work started, not a guess.

The car

The car is a Volvo V40 with an automatic gearbox. Inside the gearbox, clutch and friction parts grip and release to change gears. The fuel injectors spray fuel into the engine, and the engine mounts hold the engine steady so its movement does not shake the whole car.

Over the years and the kilometres, those clutch parts wear, injectors get tired and spray poorly, and a rubber engine mount perishes and lets the engine rock. When all three happen together you get exactly what this owner felt: slipping gears, rough running, and a heavy vibration. Reading the car properly is the only way to know which parts are actually worn, which is why we diagnose before we quote.

How we diagnosed it

We road tested the car and ran a full scan on our Volvo VIDA diagnostic system rather than guessing from the symptom alone. The scan and the drive told a clear story.

The gearbox was slipping from worn internal parts, so the car was not holding its gears. The four fuel injectors were tired and spraying poorly, which is why the engine ran rough. And the rear engine mount had perished, letting the engine rock and sending that strong vibration through the cabin.

We showed the owner each worn part before quoting. The valve body and the torque converter tested fine, so we left them alone. No upsell, only what the car actually needed.

Why a high-mileage car slips, runs rough and vibrates

Inside an automatic gearbox, clutch and friction parts do the hard work of changing gears. They wear a little every time they grip and release. On a car of this age and mileage that wear adds up, the parts start to slip, and the gearbox stops holding its gears cleanly.

Fuel injectors wear too. When they get tired they no longer spray a clean pattern, so the engine runs rough. And a rubber engine mount hardens and cracks over the years, letting the engine rock and shake the car. This is normal ageing, not something the owner did wrong. A fluid change alone does not bring back worn gearbox internals, so the proper fix is a full overhaul plus sorting the injectors and the mount.

What we did

We did the job properly rather than patch it and hope.

  • Removed the gearbox, stripped it down and overhauled it with all the internal consumables, including the worn clutch and friction parts, seals and gaskets.
  • Left the valve body and torque converter alone because they tested fine. We only replace what is worn.
  • Replaced all four tired fuel injectors with OEM-grade parts to clear the rough running.
  • Replaced the perished rear engine mount to kill the vibration.
  • Scanned it again on VIDA and road tested the car to confirm clean shifts, smooth running and no vibration.

Because a full overhaul means stripping the gearbox, replacing the worn parts and testing it after, the work took the time it needed. We did not rush it. The car shifts properly, runs smooth and sits still again, and the gearbox overhaul carries a 2 year / 40,000km warranty.

Before and after

Before

  • Gearbox slipping and not shifting right
  • Engine running rough
  • Strong vibration through the car from a perished engine mount
  • Worn gearbox internals and four tired fuel injectors

After

  • Gearbox shifting cleanly through the gears again
  • Engine running smooth after four new injectors
  • Vibration gone after a new engine mount
  • Overhauled with OEM-grade parts, scanned on VIDA and road tested before handover

What a Volvo gearbox overhaul with injectors and an engine mount costs in Singapore

What a job like this costs depends on the car and what is worn inside, so we quote after the strip-down. On this V40 the work covered the full gearbox overhaul with the worn internal parts and consumables, four new fuel injectors, and a new rear engine mount, all with the gearbox overhaul backed by a 2 year / 40,000km warranty.

What moves the price is what we find once the gearbox is open. A gearbox caught early, before more parts are damaged, sits at the lower end. One that has been slipping for a long time can need more parts replaced. This is why we open the gearbox and check first, then quote for exactly what is worn rather than guessing high.

How to catch it early

The earliest signs are small. A gearbox that jerks on a shift, hesitates before it engages, or slips so the engine revs climb without the car pulling. A rough idle or a stumble on acceleration points at the injectors. A new vibration that grows over time often means a tired engine mount.

Catching it early matters. A slipping gearbox wears itself faster the longer it runs, so a small problem can grow into a full overhaul. Changing the ATF on schedule and getting any slip, rough running or vibration checked early gives the car its best chance, and lets us fix a small fault before it damages the rest.

About the workshop

This Volvo V40 (Gearbox overhaul, fuel injector and engine mount replacement) was handled at 1 Car Service, an independent workshop in Sin Ming AutoCity, Singapore. For Volvo, we use dealer-level VIDA diagnostics. The work is backed by our 2-year, 40,000km warranty. We hold a 4.9★ rating from 1,775+ Google reviews.

Volvo V40 gearbox overhaul: common questions

How much does a Volvo gearbox overhaul cost in Singapore?

A full gearbox overhaul usually costs a few thousand dollars, depending on the car and what is worn inside. On this Volvo V40 the job also covered four new fuel injectors and a new engine mount, with the gearbox overhaul carrying a 2 year / 40,000km warranty. We open the gearbox and check first, then quote before any work begins.

Why is my Volvo V40 slipping and running rough at the same time?

On this V40 there were three separate faults. The gearbox had worn internal parts so it slipped, the four fuel injectors were tired so the engine ran rough, and a perished engine mount let the car vibrate. A proper scan on VIDA and a road test are the only way to separate what is really causing each symptom.

Can a fluid change fix a slipping gearbox?

Only if the fluid is simply old or low and nothing inside is worn. Once the internal clutch and friction parts are worn, fresh fluid does not bring them back. The proper fix is to overhaul the gearbox and replace the worn parts, not just change the oil.

Did you need to replace the whole gearbox and torque converter?

No. We overhauled the gearbox with new internal parts, but the valve body and the torque converter both tested fine, so we left them alone. We only replace what is actually worn, and we show you the parts before quoting.

Is the gearbox overhaul covered by a warranty?

Yes. A full gearbox overhaul at our workshop carries a 2 year / 40,000km warranty, whichever comes first. We confirm the exact terms with you before the work starts.
