A squeal when you start the car or switch on the aircon, a whine that rises with the revs, or a battery light that flickers? The fan belt drives your alternator, aircon compressor and often the water pump, and when it or its tensioner gives up, everything it drives stops with it. We find which part is worn, before you pay for any of them.
The belt for cracks, glazing and fraying, the tensioner for weak spring and play, every idler and pulley for a rough bearing, and the alignment of the lot. A squeal is not always the belt, and replacing a belt on a bad tensioner just brings the noise back.

It depends on the car and on what has worn: a belt on its own is a small job, a tensioner or an idler pulley adds a part each, and on some continental engines the belt drive sits behind covers or runs extra belts, which adds labour. My car has had loud squeaking noises for nearly two years, especially loud when making turns in reverse. Went to other workshops to have it fixed but the issue persisted. Jin managed to resolve the issue by replacing the fairly new but cracked fan belt and the alternator that has a misaligned pulley. His technicians are highly competent. Prices are reasonable and clearly itemised. Jin did not try to push for nice-to-have but less important/urgent works.

The fan belt, also called the serpentine, drive or accessory belt, is the long ribbed belt at the front of the engine. The crankshaft spins it, and it drives the alternator that charges your battery, the aircon compressor, on most cars the water pump that cools the engine, and on older cars the power steering pump. A spring-loaded tensioner keeps it tight and a few idler pulleys guide it round the corners.
In Singapore's heat the rubber hardens and cracks, the ribs glaze smooth and the belt starts to slip, which is the squeal you hear on start-up or when the aircon compressor kicks in and the load jumps. The tensioner's spring weakens and its bearing wears, so the belt flutters and the squeal comes and goes. An idler bearing that has run dry whines and rumbles with the revs. Each is a different part and a different bill, and the noise alone does not tell you which. The timing belt, inside the engine, is a separate job altogether and not what this page covers.
A slipping belt is already failing to drive what it should: the alternator undercharges, the aircon weakens and the water pump turns slower than it needs to. When the belt finally snaps, all of that stops at once. The battery light comes on, the aircon dies, the steering goes heavy on cars with a hydraulic pump, and on engines where the belt drives the water pump the temperature climbs within minutes. Pull over when that happens, because driving on cooks the engine.
A tensioner or idler that seizes is worse, because it can shred a new belt in seconds and, on some engines, take the timing cover or a pulley with it. That is why we replace the tensioner and idlers with the belt whenever they are tired, rather than fitting a belt and waiting for the noise to return. The belt routing is noted, the tensioner released and the old belt removed. Every pulley is spun by hand and listened to, and the tensioner is checked for spring strength and bearing play, because this is the moment to catch a part that would ruin the new belt. A quality belt in the exact length and rib count for the engine is routed correctly and tensioned to spec, and a new tensioner or idler goes on where the old one is tired.
On some continental engines the belt drive sits behind covers or the engine carries two belts, one for the alternator and aircon and one for the water pump or a second pump, which is where the labour goes. With everything back on, the engine is run and listened to with the aircon cycling and the steering on lock, then driven, so the squeal is gone before you collect the car. On Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche the belt drive often runs a decoupler pulley on the alternator, a hydraulic tensioner and more idlers than an everyday car, and a squeal can come from any of them.
