Rough idle at the lights, a stumble when you accelerate, a check engine light that flashes, or fuel economy that has quietly got worse? Worn spark plugs and a failing ignition coil are the most common reasons an engine misfires, and one of the most common jobs on our bills. We find which cylinder and which part, before you pay for a set of anything.
The scan tool tells us which cylinder is misfiring and how often. A swap test tells us whether the misfire follows the coil; if it stays put, the plug, the injector, the wiring and compression on that cylinder are checked before anything is quoted. A vacuum leak or a dirty throttle body is a different, cheaper fix.

It depends on the engine: plugs are priced per cylinder and a turbocharged direct-injection continental engine needs a specific iridium plug that costs more than the plug in a Japanese hatchback, coils are usually replaced singly on the cylinder that misfires, and access matters, because on some engines the intake or a cover has to come off to reach them. At 1 Car Service we read the misfire data and test the coils before quoting, then give you an itemised quote for the parts and labour before any work begins. Hatchback-Mazda2. Went for regular service on Saturday 8th June. Informed by friendly mechanic Jin to check on some minor problem like aircon not cold, brake pad and he also did an overall check. Was informed that need to change spark plug, transmission oil, throttle cleaning and brake oil and the cost was acceptable. After servicing, driving is smoother. Every petrol engine needs a spark in each cylinder at exactly the right moment. The ignition coil turns the battery's low voltage into the far higher voltage that jumps the spark plug's gap, and on most modern engines each cylinder has its own coil sitting directly on its plug. When either one is tired, that cylinder misfires: the engine shakes at idle, stumbles under load and throws a misfire code for that cylinder.
Plugs wear slowly. The electrodes erode, the gap opens and the coil has to work harder to fire it, which is why worn plugs often take a coil with them. Coils fail with heat and age, sometimes suddenly and sometimes only when the engine is working hard. The scan tool tells us which cylinder is complaining; a simple swap test, moving the coil to another cylinder and seeing whether the misfire follows it, confirms a coil fault; if the misfire stays put, the plug and the other cylinder-specific causes are checked next. That is how we quote the right part rather than a set of everything.
An engine that misfires is pushing unburnt fuel into the exhaust. That fuel burns in the catalytic converter instead, and a catalytic converter is a far bigger bill than a set of plugs. A flashing check engine light is the car telling you that damage is happening now: ease off, and get the car to a workshop rather than driving on.
A steady light or a rough idle is less urgent but still costs you every day, in fuel, in a hesitant throttle and in strain on the coils and the catalytic converter. The plugs are a service item with a mileage interval for a reason, and skipping them is one of the surest ways to turn a cheap job into an expensive one. If the shaking is only at idle and the plugs turn out fine, the cause is often a worn engine mounting instead, and we check for that too.
The plugs are replaced as a full set with the exact type the engine calls for: heat range, thread, reach and gap all matter, and a turbocharged direct-injection engine is particular about them. Each plug is torqued to spec, because a plug that is too tight strips the head and one that is too loose overheats. The coils and their boots are inspected as they go back on, and a failed coil is replaced with a quality part, singly on the cylinder that misfires or as a set where they have aged together and you would rather not be back next month.
On some engines the intake manifold, a cover or the coil pack rail has to come off to reach the plugs, which is where the labour goes. Once everything is back, the fault memory is cleared and the car driven so we can confirm the misfire counters are at zero. You get the old plugs to look at, and WhatsApp photos as the job goes.
