Walnut Blasting & Carbon Cleaning in Singapore

Restore the power, smoothness and fuel economy your direct-injection engine lost to carbon. Walnut blasting from $380.

Rough idle, a hesitant throttle, misfires or worse fuel economy? On direct-injection engines, carbon cakes onto the intake valves and chokes the airflow. We blast it off with walnut media and clean the intake properly, so your engine breathes and pulls like it should again.

We service all makes and models

Car brands we service: Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Maserati, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, and more

The proper fix for carbon build-up

On direct-injection engines, fuel no longer washes the intake valves, so carbon cakes on and chokes the airflow. Walnut blasting physically removes it, the same method the carmakers use, not just a chemical rinse that never reaches the valves.

Honest advice, clear price

We tell you straight whether your engine needs a simple throttle and intake clean or a full walnut blast. Walnut blasting from $380, quoted before any work. No upsell.

Continental specialists, dealer-level tools

We scan your engine with dealer-level diagnostics to confirm carbon is behind the rough idle or misfire, not a coil, injector or sensor, before we touch it. Spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee.

We carbon-clean and walnut-blast direct-injection engines across the continental makes, Audi and VW, BMW and Mini, Mercedes and Porsche, plus Japanese engines, to restore the power, smoothness and economy that carbon takes away.

Why direct-injection engines choke on carbon

If your car is a newer continental model, its engine is almost certainly direct-injection, and that is exactly why it builds up carbon on the intake valves.

Older engines squirted fuel into the intake port, so every drop of petrol washed over the back of the intake valve and kept it clean. Direct injection sprays the fuel straight into the cylinder instead, which is more efficient, but it means the intake valves never get washed. Oil vapour drawn back through the crankcase breather bakes onto the hot valves and hardens into carbon. Layer by layer it narrows the port the air has to flow through.

As the airflow chokes, the engine starts to run rough, hesitate, misfire and lose power, and it drinks more fuel doing it. It creeps in slowly, usually somewhere past 60,000 to 100,000km, so many owners put up with a car that is quietly getting worse without realising why. A chemical additive down the fuel tank cannot fix this, because on a direct-injection engine the fuel never touches the intake valves where the carbon is. The carbon has to be physically removed, and that is what walnut blasting does.

Why direct-injection engines choke on carbon

The symptoms of carbon build-up

Carbon on the intake valves shows up in ways that are easy to blame on other things.

1. A rough or shaky idle. Especially noticeable on a cold start, when the engine feels lumpy or hunts up and down instead of settling.

2. Hesitation and flat spots. You press the throttle and there is a beat of nothing, or the power comes in unevenly, because the restricted valves upset the airflow.

3. Misfires and a check-engine light. Heavy build-up can cause genuine misfires and log fault codes, particularly on BMW and VW group engines.

4. Worse fuel economy. A choked intake makes the engine work harder for the same power, so you fill up more often than you used to.

5. Lost power, especially low down. The engine feels sluggish and lazy off the line, and does not pull the way it did when it was newer.

These overlap with worn spark plugs, tired coils and dirty injectors, which is exactly why we diagnose first and confirm carbon is the cause before recommending a blast, so you are not paying for a clean when the real fault is a $40 coil.

Throttle body cleaning vs walnut blasting: which do you need?

These two get lumped together, but they are different jobs for different levels of carbon, and it is worth knowing which your engine actually needs.

Throttle and intake cleaning tackles the lighter build-up on the throttle body and the intake tract. It brings back a smoother idle and a crisper throttle, and it is quick and affordable, which is why we often recommend it as part of a regular service every 20,000km or so to keep things clean. Plenty of our customers feel a real difference from this alone, smoother running and better response, and it keeps carbon from getting a proper foothold.

Walnut blasting is the deep clean for the heavy, baked-on carbon that sits on the intake valves themselves on a direct-injection engine. A chemical clean or a throttle clean cannot reach there. We remove the intake manifold, seal each intake port, and blast the valves with crushed walnut shell media, a grit hard enough to strip the carbon but soft enough to leave the metal unharmed, while a vacuum pulls the debris straight out. It is the same method used by the carmakers, and it is the proper fix once the valves are genuinely caked. Walnut blasting starts from $380.

Not sure which yours needs? That is what the diagnosis is for. We look at the engine, the mileage and the symptoms and tell you straight.

How we walnut-blast an engine

  1. Diagnose first. We scan the engine and check that the rough running, misfire or lost power is actually carbon, and not a coil, injector, spark plug or sensor. No point blasting valves if the fault is elsewhere.
  2. Open up the intake. We remove the intake manifold to reach the intake valves. On most engines this is also a good moment to check the intake gaskets and PCV system.
  3. Blast each port. With the valve closed, we seal each intake port and blast the carbon off the valve with walnut shell media, while a vacuum extracts the shell and the loosened carbon at the same time so none of it drops into the cylinder.
  4. Clean the throttle body and intake. While the intake is off, we clean the throttle body and the intake tract so the whole airway is clear, not just the valves.
  5. Reassemble with fresh gaskets. New intake gaskets go in where needed, everything is torqued back properly, and we clear any stored fault codes.
  6. Road test. We road-test the car so you can feel the engine idling smoothly and pulling cleanly again before you collect it.

Most walnut blasting jobs are completed in about a day, depending on how much has to come off to reach the intake on your engine. We confirm the timeline once we have seen your car.

How we walnut-blast an engine

The engines that need it most

Direct injection is everywhere now, but a few engine families are especially well known for intake-valve carbon.

Audi and Volkswagen. The 2.0 TFSI and TSI (EA888), 1.4 TSI, and the 3.0 TFSI V6 across the A3, A4, A5, A6, Q3, Q5, Golf GTI, Passat and Tiguan are classic candidates. Rough idle and misfire codes past 80,000km are common.

BMW and Mini. The N43, N53, N54, N55, N20 and B48 engines across the 1, 3, 5 Series, X1, X3 and Mini range are known for it. Cold-start roughness and misfires are the usual signs.

Mercedes-Benz. The M270, M274 four-cylinders and the M276 V6 across the C-Class, E-Class, GLC and more build up intake carbon as the mileage climbs.

Porsche and others. Direct-injection Porsche, Volvo and many current Japanese engines develop the same build-up. If your car is a turbo or a modern petrol from roughly the last fifteen years, it is very likely direct-injection.

Tell us your make, model and mileage and we will tell you whether walnut blasting is worth doing on your engine yet.

What you get back after a carbon clean

A carbon clean does not add power your engine never had. What it does is give back the power, smoothness and economy that carbon quietly took away, by clearing the airway back to how the engine was designed to breathe.

After a proper clean, owners typically notice a smoother idle, a throttle that responds cleanly again, misfires gone, and better fuel economy because the engine is no longer fighting a choked intake. On a direct-injection engine with a genuine build-up, the difference can be surprising, the car simply feels healthy again. As one Volvo owner told us after an intake clean here, their fuel economy improved by around ten percent.

It is honest, mechanical work with a real result. We are not promising miracles or magic numbers, just your own engine breathing and running the way it should.

Carbon cleaning and walnut blasting cost in Singapore

Walnut blasting starts from $380. The final price depends on your engine, mainly how many cylinders it has and how much has to come off to reach the intake, so a straight number comes once we know your model.

A throttle and intake clean is a lighter, cheaper job and is often done as part of a service. Which one your engine needs comes down to the diagnosis: for lighter build-up, a throttle and intake clean does the job; for heavy baked-on valve carbon on a direct-injection engine, walnut blasting is the proper fix.

WhatsApp us your make, model and mileage and we will tell you which service makes sense and give you a clear price before any work begins. You can spread the cost with Atome, Grab or Shopee.

Walnut blasting and carbon cleaning FAQ

What is walnut blasting?

Walnut blasting is a deep clean for the intake valves on a direct-injection engine. We remove the intake manifold, seal each intake port, and blast the carbon off the valves with crushed walnut shell media while a vacuum extracts the debris. The walnut grit is hard enough to strip the carbon but soft enough to leave the metal unharmed. It is the proper mechanical fix once the valves are genuinely caked.

How is walnut blasting different from a throttle clean or a chemical carbon clean?

A throttle and intake clean and a chemical additive tackle lighter build-up in the throttle body and intake tract. Neither can reach the intake valves on a direct-injection engine, because the fuel and the chemical never flow over them. Walnut blasting physically removes the baked-on carbon from the valves themselves, which is the only proper fix for a heavy build-up.

How much does walnut blasting cost in Singapore?

Walnut blasting starts from $380. The final price depends on your engine, mainly the number of cylinders and how much has to come off to reach the intake. A lighter throttle and intake clean costs less. WhatsApp us your model and mileage for a clear price before any work begins.

Which engines need walnut blasting?

Direct-injection engines, which is most modern turbo and petrol cars from roughly the last fifteen years. The best-known families are Audi and VW TFSI and TSI, BMW and Mini N and B series, and Mercedes M270, M274 and M276, but Porsche, Volvo and many Japanese direct-injection engines build up the same intake carbon.

How often should I have my intake carbon cleaned?

A light throttle and intake clean every 20,000km or so as part of a service helps keep carbon from getting a foothold. A full walnut blast is usually needed less often, when symptoms show or as the mileage climbs past 60,000 to 100,000km on a direct-injection engine. We advise based on your engine and how it is running.

Will carbon cleaning restore lost power and fuel economy?

It gives back the power, smoothness and economy that carbon took away, by clearing the airway back to how the engine was designed to breathe. It does not add power the engine never had. On a direct-injection engine with a genuine build-up, owners typically notice a smoother idle, cleaner throttle response, fewer misfires and better fuel economy.

How long does walnut blasting take?

Most walnut blasting jobs are completed in about a day, depending on how much has to come off to reach the intake on your engine. We confirm the timeline once we have seen your car and keep you updated on WhatsApp.

Can carbon build-up cause a check-engine light or misfire?

Yes. Heavy intake-valve carbon can cause genuine misfires and log fault codes, especially on BMW and VW group engines. Because those symptoms also come from worn plugs, tired coils or dirty injectors, we diagnose first and confirm carbon is the cause before recommending a clean.

Do you clean carbon on continental and Japanese cars?

Yes. We carbon-clean and walnut-blast direct-injection engines across the continental makes, Audi, VW, BMW, Mini, Mercedes and Porsche, as well as Japanese engines. Tell us your make, model and mileage and we will advise on the right service.
