It depends on the car and the design: many cars use a sealed hub unit that bolts on, while others use a pressed-in bearing that needs the hub removed and pressed, which takes longer, and a continental hub with a built-in speed sensor costs more than a plain pressed bearing on a Japanese hatchback. When down to 1 Car Service workshop due to a sound heard from front right side while driving. After they have test drive and made a check, they managed to find out the fault and change the front wheel bearing. Have been using the car for few days and there is no more noise. Had vibrating noise problem with my Mazda 3 car when travelling at certain speeds. Brought down to check and they took short time to diagnose that the problem was due to my wheel bearings. The whole experience just took half a day to finish. Communication was also easy with Moses, I didn't feel any pressure or pushy in sales like some other workshops which I have been to. Slightly pricey but at least my problem is resolved quickly without headache.

Bolt-on sealed hub units replaced with a quality part, the ABS speed sensor checked, and everything torqued to the maker's spec.
Bearings pressed into the knuckle or hub removed and pressed with the right tooling, with new seals and circlips, so the new bearing is not damaged on the way in.

A wheel bearing lets the wheel spin freely while carrying the car's weight. When it wears, the rollers and races pit, and the wheel starts to drone. The classic sign is a hum or growl that rises with road speed rather than engine speed, and changes when you steer: swing the car one way and the noise gets louder as that side takes the load, swing the other way and it eases. Left alone it turns into a rumble, then play in the wheel, and in the worst case the wheel can seize or the hub can fail.
But a bearing is not the only thing that hums. A cupped or feathered tyre drones at speed too, a worn CV joint clicks or rumbles on turns, and a dragging brake growls and runs hot. That is why we road test the car and then check each corner on the lift before anything is quoted. If the noise turns out to be a tyre, we tell you; if it is the brakes, see our brake pad replacement page; if it is a worn joint, that is a driveshaft job, not a bearing.
With the car on the lift we rock each wheel top to bottom and side to side, feeling for play, then spin it by hand and listen for roughness at the hub. On a stubborn one we run the car in gear on the lift and listen at each hub with a stethoscope, which pins the noise to one corner. Many cars also carry the ABS speed sensor in the hub, so a bearing that has worn enough to disturb the sensor gap can throw an ABS or traction light, which is another clue.
We replace the bearing that is worn, not the pair by default. If the opposite side is also showing play or roughness we tell you and quote both, so you are not back in a few months for the same job on the other corner. Either way you see the worn bearing and get the itemised quote before we start.
Most modern cars use a sealed hub unit, a complete assembly with the bearing, the flange and often the ABS sensor ring built in, which unbolts from the knuckle and bolts back on. That is the quicker job. Older and some continental designs use a bearing pressed into the knuckle or onto the hub, which has to be pressed out and the new one pressed in with the right tooling, then the hub pressed back through it. Done without the right press or with the load on the wrong race, the new bearing is damaged before the wheel is back on, which is why a cheap job often hums again within months.
We use the correct tooling, fit new seals, circlips and hub nuts where the design calls for them, torque the hub nut and the wheel to the maker's spec, and road test the car. On cars with a hub-mounted speed sensor we clear the ABS fault and confirm the wheel speed reads correctly on the scan tool.
The table below is drawn from our own invoices, not a guess: the wheel bearing and hub part lines on our bills, by make. What moves the price is the design. A bolt-on hub unit with a built-in speed sensor on a continental car costs more than a plain pressed bearing on a Japanese hatchback, and rear and front bearings on the same car can differ.
