Audi Q7 Oil Leak and Spark Plug Replacement: Traced and Fixed

The owner was planning to renew the Q7's COE and wanted the car checked over first. The dash was also showing an oil change and inspection reminder.

Our inspection found more than a routine service. We quoted a front and rear suspension overhaul, and found the engine and gearbox mounts sagging, which was making the car vibrate when stationary. The service check then turned up an engine oil leak, coolant leaking from several hoses, a battery down to 27%, and spark plugs due for replacement.

The owner approved all of it, so everything was done in one visit.

We checked the Q7 over before quoting anything. The spark plugs were due for replacement with the service, and the inspection also turned up leaks.

Our technician found engine oil leaking, and we quoted the parts to stop it: the timing top cover, the timing bottom cover with the main pulley oil seal, two magnet sensors with O-rings, the oil sump with a new drain nut, and the oil level sensor. We also noted the coolant hoses showing surface cracking consistent with age.

We addressed the oil leak, the coolant hoses and the spark plugs in the one visit, alongside the other work the owner approved.

Oil leak repair:

• Replaced the timing top cover.
• Replaced the timing bottom cover with the main pulley oil seal.
• Replaced the two magnet sensors with new O-rings.
• Replaced the oil sump with a new drain nut.
• Replaced the oil level sensor.

Coolant leak repair:

• Replaced the feed hose and the return hose with new O-rings, the heater hose and the connector hose, and refilled the coolant.

Ignition:

• Replaced all four spark plugs.

The same visit also covered a front and rear suspension overhaul (absorbers, arms, linkages, bushes and the rear anti-roll bar) with a wheel alignment, a new engine and gearbox mounting set, a new battery, and the service: engine oil and filter, air and cabin filters, a throttle body clean, transmission fluid and brake fluid.

Oil leak repair on an Audi Q7 varies with the source of the leak and the parts involved, so we quote after the leak is traced. On this Q7 the oil-leak parts and labour came to $2,180, the four coolant hoses with coolant and labour to $1,015, and the four spark plugs to $192, all before GST.

The same visit also covered the suspension overhaul, the engine and gearbox mounts, a new battery and the service, so the whole bill came to $15,000 with GST.

The diagnostic step is important. Replacing gaskets on guesswork is expensive. Tracing each leak first let us repair only what needed repairing.
