What the owner reported

The aircon system on a Forester at this mileage has cycled through years of Singapore's humidity and heat. The compressor is the heart of the system: it pressurises the refrigerant so the cooling coil inside the cabin can absorb heat from the air. When the compressor develops an internal seal leak, refrigerant escapes and the system slowly loses its ability to cool. Refrigerant also carries the compressor oil that lubricates the system; when refrigerant goes, the lubrication goes with it, and the compressor wears faster until it fails completely.

How we diagnosed it

We injected UV dye into the A/C system and ran the compressor to circulate it. A UV lamp then reveals where the dye has escaped, showing exactly where the leak is.

The dye showed up clearly at the compressor. The refrigerant was leaking from inside the compressor body, meaning the internal seals had failed. A compressor that is losing refrigerant internally cannot be repaired with a top-up or a seal kit. It needs replacement.

We also inspected the condenser, cooling coil and A/C pipes. The condenser showed internal corrosion consistent with a car of this age and mileage, and the A/C pipes had surface wear at their fittings. We explained the full scope to the owner: replacing the compressor alone, without the condenser, risks contaminating the new compressor with debris from the old condenser, which is why the warranty on the new compressor applies only when the condenser is replaced at the same time. This is not upselling; it is the correct way to protect the new part.

Why this happens on a Subaru Forester
