What each repair involves on the C-Class, when to inspect or replace, and what our invoices say it costs
The figures are from our invoices. Scheduled maintenance follows the requirements for your car's engine, gearbox and model year; other repairs are assessed from symptoms, inspection and diagnostic results rather than a universal age or mileage. The notes under each repair are general guidance for cars driven in Singapore, not statistics.
Gearbox oil changes on the C-Class
26% of the C-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (78 of 301, 87 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $250 (70 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).
Gearbox oil lubricates moving parts, carries hydraulic pressure and removes heat. Degraded fluid can bring hesitant shifts, shuddering or a burnt smell. Waiting can increase heat and friction inside the gearbox, leading to broader wear.
We inspect the fluid condition and leaks, road-test the shift quality, and review XENTRY fault data before recommending a fluid and filter change. If the evidence points to a separate fault, we quote that repair instead of treating the whole gearbox.
Service interval: Follow the interval and fluid specification for your gearbox and model year; they differ between gearbox types even within one model, and we confirm them for your car. Where the maker lists no change for the life of the car, ask us whether a preventive change makes sense for your gearbox and driving.
Maintenance and early warning signs: Use the specified fluid and fill procedure, with the filter where your gearbox has a serviceable one, and avoid hard launches while the gearbox is cold. Fresh fluid is maintenance, not a cure for a gearbox that is already faulty. Early signs: a burnt smell, dark fluid, shifts that have become rough.

Coolant leaks and cooling-system repairs on the C-Class
20% of the C-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (61 of 301, 65 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $600 (middle half $350 to $1,250, 49 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).
The water pump circulates coolant, the thermostat controls its flow, and the radiator releases heat. A warning, rising temperature, sweet smell or coloured puddle can point to a cooling-system fault. Delaying a repair can cause overheating and serious engine damage.
We use a cooling-system pressure test, leak-tracing dye and XENTRY temperature data to locate the source. We replace the leaking or failed pump, thermostat, radiator, hose or seal, while leaving sound parts in place.
When to inspect or replace: Water pumps, thermostats, radiators and hoses are inspected and pressure-tested and replaced when a fault is confirmed; some engines also list a scheduled water-pump replacement, which we check for your car. Coolant itself is changed on the maker's schedule for your engine.
Maintenance and early warning signs: Top up only with the specified coolant, and stop as soon as a temperature warning appears. Early signs: a sweet smell, a coolant level that keeps dropping, a wet patch, a temperature gauge climbing in traffic.

Brake pads, discs and wear sensors on the C-Class
18% of the C-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (54 of 301, 61 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $800 (middle half $700 to $1,500, 46 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).
Brake pads create friction against the discs, while wear sensors alert the driver when attention is due. Squealing, grinding, vibration or weaker braking can signal worn or damaged parts. Waiting can score the discs, reduce braking performance and widen the repair.
We measure the pad material and disc condition, inspect wear-sensor readings with XENTRY, and check for binding. We renew the worn parts identified by the measurements rather than replacing sound brake hardware.
When to inspect or replace: Pads and discs are measured at every service and replaced by thickness and condition against the limits for your car, not by mileage. Discs are judged on the same measurement, not on a fixed number of pad changes.
Maintenance and early warning signs: Brake early and gently, leave a gap so you roll instead of stopping at every light, and use engine braking on long descents; stop-and-go traffic wears pads and discs faster. Early signs: squeal, grinding, a pulse through the pedal, a wear warning on the dash.

Battery replacement on the C-Class
16% of the C-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (48 of 301, 50 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $350 (middle half $300 to $350, 43 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).
The battery starts the engine and helps stabilise power for the car's electrical systems. Slow cranking, dim lights, warning messages or unreliable starting can appear when it weakens. Delaying a test can leave the car unable to start and may create misleading electrical faults.
We run a battery-health and charging-system test, then use XENTRY to check stored voltage faults. We replace the battery only when the results show it cannot hold or deliver the required charge.
When to inspect or replace: The starter battery is tested at every service and replaced on the test result rather than at a set age. Cars with a separate auxiliary battery for the stop-start system or the electronics have that battery tested and replaced the same way, and it is counted in this row. Hybrid drive batteries are a separate matter.
Maintenance and early warning signs: Short trips and daily aircon use are hard on a battery in Singapore; give the car a longer run where you can, switch accessories off before the engine, and park in shade. Early signs: slow cranking, lights dimming at idle, stop-start no longer working, a warning about the auxiliary battery, electrical warnings that come and go.

Sensor, switch and control-module faults on the C-Class
11% of the C-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (34 of 301, 38 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $550 (middle half $250 to $1,250, 28 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).
Sensors report operating conditions, switches provide driver inputs, and control modules coordinate connected systems. A fault may show as a warning light, an unavailable feature or erratic behaviour. An unresolved signal or circuit fault can affect related systems and make diagnosis harder.
We scan with XENTRY, compare live data with the reported symptoms, and test power, ground and signal paths. We repair the faulty sensor, switch, module or wiring section instead of changing a wider system by guesswork.
When repair may be needed: Diagnosis-led: a fault code names a circuit, not a part, so we test the sensor, switch, wiring and module before anything is replaced.
Maintenance and early warning signs: Keep sunroof drains, door seals and boot seals clear so rain stays out of the cabin and boot, fix battery and charging faults early, and never jump-start with the polarity guessed. Early signs: warning lights that come and go, features that drop out in the rain, an unexplained battery drain.
Spark plugs and ignition coils on the C-Class
11% of the C-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (32 of 301, 36 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $200 (25 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).
Spark plugs ignite the fuel mixture, while ignition coils supply the voltage they need. Worn plugs or a weak coil can cause rough idling, hesitation, misfiring or a warning light. Continued misfiring can send unburned fuel into the exhaust and damage the catalytic converter.
We read XENTRY misfire data, inspect the plugs and test coil output under load. We renew the plugs or coil identified by testing, without disturbing unrelated ignition parts.
Service interval: Spark plugs have a scheduled interval that depends on the engine and plug type, and we confirm it for your car. Ignition coils are replaced on diagnosis, not on a schedule, and a misfire does not by itself mean a coil has failed.
Maintenance and early warning signs: Keep to the plug interval and have misfires checked early, because unburnt fuel can damage the catalytic converter. Early signs: rough idle, hesitation, a flashing engine light.

Gasket, seal, cover and housing oil leaks on the C-Class
7% of the C-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (22 of 301, 22 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $350 (middle half $200 to $650, 14 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).
Gaskets and seals keep engine oil inside while moving parts are lubricated. Drops under the car, a burning smell, smoke or a falling oil level can reveal a leak. Waiting can lower the oil supply and contaminate belts, mounts or nearby electrical parts.
We review XENTRY fault data, clean the area and trace the leak from the highest wet point, adding dye when needed. We renew the leaking gasket, seal, cover or housing while keeping dry parts untouched.
When to inspect or replace: Checked at every service and repaired according to the source and severity found, from a weeping seal to a housing. No age makes a leak due.
Maintenance and early warning signs: Change the oil on time to the maker's specification, and fix small weeps before they reach belts, mountings and electrical parts. Early signs: drips under the car, a burning smell after driving, a falling oil level.

Suspension absorbers, arms, bushes and links on the C-Class
7% of the C-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (21 of 301, 23 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $1,500 (middle half $1,050 to $2,750, 18 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).
Absorbers control body movement, while arms, bushes and links keep the wheels located. Knocks, vibration, pulling, a floating ride or uneven tyre wear can indicate wear. Delaying repairs can damage tyres, reduce stability and place extra load on nearby joints.
We road-test the vibration or knock, inspect mountings and joints on the lift, and use XENTRY when an electronic suspension warning is present. We replace the worn absorber, arm, bush or link shown by the inspection, not the whole suspension.
When to inspect or replace: Absorbers, arms, bushes and links are inspected on a lift and on a road test and replaced individually when worn, leaking or split. They do not share one lifespan.
Maintenance and early warning signs: Slow down for humps and rough roads, avoid mounting kerbs, and keep tyres at the right pressure. Early signs: knocks over bumps, a bouncy or floaty ride, uneven tyre wear, wandering steering.

Aircon cooling-coil leaks on the C-Class
7% of the C-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (21 of 301, 22 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $1,400 (middle half $1,350 to $1,550, 18 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).
The cooling coil absorbs heat from cabin air as refrigerant passes through it. A leak can cause weak cooling, warm air or cooling that fades after a gas top-up. Running with low refrigerant can reduce lubrication and place added strain on the compressor.
We test refrigerant pressures and vent temperature, use dye or an electronic detector to trace leakage, and read climate faults with XENTRY. We recommend a cooling coil only when testing confirms the leak, while checking the rest of the circuit for another source.
When repair may be needed: Coil replacement follows a confirmed leak or blockage found on a pressure or dye test, not age. Reduced cooling has several possible causes, so the coil is condemned only once the test points to it.
Maintenance and early warning signs: Change the cabin filter on schedule and keep the aircon drain clear. Owners often tell us about a musty smell at start-up; in our experience it comes from the coil staying wet after the engine is cut, and basement parking makes it worse. Switching the compressor off shortly before you park and letting the fan run until the air is no longer cold helps the coil dry out. Early signs: that smell, water in the passenger footwell, cooling that fades over weeks.
This aircon repair is covered by a warranty of at least 6 months.

Aircon compressor faults on the C-Class
6% of the C-Class registrations in our records had at least one invoice involving this work (19 of 301, 20 invoices in all). On the bill, this item typically came to about $900 (middle half $850 to $950, 12 recent priced bills, GST included; other work on the same bill is not counted).
The compressor circulates refrigerant and creates the pressure difference needed for cabin cooling. Warm air, intermittent cooling or unusual noise can point to a compressor or control fault. If internal wear releases debris, continued operation can contaminate the circuit and damage related parts.
We compare refrigerant pressures, command the compressor through XENTRY, and check for noise, control faults and debris. We replace the compressor only when it fails those checks, rather than blaming it for every warm-air complaint.
When repair may be needed: Replacement follows a confirmed compressor fault, not the car's age. Weak cooling on its own does not mean the compressor has failed, so any change in cooling, a new noise when the aircon engages or a compressor that no longer cuts in is assessed first.
Maintenance and early warning signs: Run the aircon regularly, keep the condenser and grille clean so the system is not working against high pressure, and have weak cooling investigated rather than topped up with gas again and again. Early signs: cooling that fades in traffic, a rattle or whine when the compressor engages, a clutch that cycles on and off.
This aircon repair is covered by a warranty of at least 6 months.
